Fuel Card
Posted by Fred on January 22, 2014 at 10:15 amHi PC,
I fueled up at a TA the other day in CT and the fuel
card worked just fine. There are not many Loves stations here in the North East and none listed up here in New England that I can see except for an independent stop in Springfield,
MA. So, now I’m wondering, do all TA’s across the country accept our fuel cards or did I just get lucky?Fred

Fred,
The specific locations that accept the card are shown on the Google maps that you can access via the links Alicia sent in the instructions with your cards.
When we were in Maine last fall I used the maps and was able to find a Hess truck stop that accepted the card, had the cheapest fuel for miles, and gave a 5 cent discount.

Fred,
I think you’ll find that the card is good at most truckstops and you’ll get the cash price. If you can hold out for a Loves, then the extra .10 cents kicks in. I fueled at the private stops once and there was no savings.
Bet you wish you were back in CA about now……

I need to call Alicia on this but has anyone encouintered the error code 56 and exceeded limits message?
-
Had the same issue with with my card last week coming back from Florida.

Good Morning Everyone,
I am working on finding out what this code means and am working on correcting this issue. I will let you know when I have found what this is and how to correct it.
Thank You
Alicia

Good Morning,
I have looked into the Error Code of 56 and that is not a code of the Card but a code of the Pump. If you could please call me directly when this is happening I can look at the transaction real time as you are swiping your card to figure out the issue.
Also if you can give me examples of the day that you swiped this card and received this code I can look at it and see what issue actually occurred.
I hope this helps. Please know that you can always call me if you need to while you are fueling if you have any issues at all.
Thank You
Alicia

Since the fuel discount program has been in place for a while this is a good opportuity for members who use it to give a review of how it is working, if there are any issues, and if there are any suggestions to improve it.
Now that I have used it since its introduction I have found no problems at all. The card works, I fuel up, and I go. I don’t have to walk inside the truck stop, stand in line or even hang on the intercom at the fuel island to get the pump turned on. I have learned to plan my fuel stops and the result can be more savings in addition to the discounts. Within several miles fuel can be priced significantly more or less than nearby truck stops so it is worthwhile to use the Love’s web site to check prices, or if considering other than Loves, go to sites like Gas Buddy.
I have one concern that Alicia is aware of and that is if you have long range fuel tanks be aware that a daily purchase limit of $800 was established and if we see fuel prices jump the $800 limit may have to be changed.
Also, for our Canadian friends and members from IN or OR the discount program won’t work. IN and OR have a pricing method for tax collection or exempts that doesn’t work with the cards, and the cards will not work in Canada.
As a reminder, the cards work only on truck islands at truck stops. If the purchase is less than 100 gallons there is a $10 charge so it is best to take on over 100 gallons if you can. However there have been a few times when the $10 charge was worth it because the price of the fuel I took on was significantly cheaper than any other fuel along my route making the net savings worth while.
If you are concerned about the use of biodiesel the Loves web site list the biodiesel content. My last fuel stop was in McCalla, AL and it was B19.

Jon,
I’ve used my fuel card twice now.
The first time I had to call Alicia to help me out. I think it was really my fault (or the cashier fat fingering my PIN). On the first time, trying it at the pump didn’t work out (This was probably not understanding the prompts and putting in the wrong information). I went inside and the cashier ran the card. First try didn’t work, called Alicia and she helped me out. Second try worked fine (as I said, I think the cashier typed in the wrong PIN).
The second time I used it, worked perfect at the pump (I took my time making sure what I entered was correct). I actually walked to the fuel desk after fill up so I could get my receipts. Loves put then out in slots at the fuel desk. Wanted to make sure there was no identifying information on the receipts if I left them behind. Also allowed me to keep for my records and check against the email Profit tools sends out each day with the purchase details.
Overall the card is very convenient and the discount of cash minus $0.10 is very nice. In those two fill ups, I have already recouped my annual fee for the program plus saved another $100.
Now that I understand how the funds are dealt with, I may be contacting Alicia and see if we can change it to a different bank account. Would rather it be connected to something other then my main checking/savings account in the event that the card is in anyway compromised. But will wait to do that till after we setup a bank account that we use for nothing more then travel (fuel, camping, etc. and keep it away from my main accounts). I am sure Alicia will be more then helpful when we do this, she has been great up till now!

A good point about security and I’ll try to help put minds at ease.
First, Nobody but Profit Tools who adminsters the program ever sees your data. In fact we really do not even know who has completed the application process and has cards. We do see if anyone enters their VIN to begin the process of reaching the application because we have to help with VIN numbers and assign some to non-Prevost owners, but from that point on an applicant is off the PC site and is on the Profit Tool site. So if there are any concerns about personal information being visible to Tom or I or our web guru rest assured that information is only available to Profit Tool who stands the risk and administers the program.
When you do get the cards if they should fall into the hands of someone else they will prove useless to them. First, to be used the bad guys need to use them at the fuel island at a truck stop. But even if they have figured that out (which is unlikely because there is nothing on the card to indicate where they may be used) they must know your last four digits of your VIN. I cannot imagine the crook that steals your wallet wanting to hang on your wiper arms and stand on your bumper to look at your VIN. But even if the crook knows the cards are for fuel, has copied your VIN, he still needs to know the 4 digit PIN that you selected.
The card can’t be used at other than the truck stops that participate in the program, and unless someone knows the two 4 digit codes they still cannot be used so they are more secure than any cards you have ever carried.

Jon,
My concerns have nothing to do with PC and/or ProfitTools, but more with the point of sale and possibility of hacking those systems.
-
The only thing I can suggest is to clear the pump after fueling. I suspect if someone hacks the credit card information from the pump they are going to be disappointed unless they use it to buy fuel only. As soon as they buy fuel the first time you get an email so your response will be pretty quick.

Alicia
what is the “exceeded limit” message?
I wish we could pay the bill with a skymiles card. The miles are worth more than the discount.
