  • Fluids, Filter, and Maintenance Items List

Posted by Ken on December 2, 2012 at 4:01 pm

Have owned a few coaches but never an 8V92. Had a 6-71 once, what a nice running motor that was, leaked but always ran good… anyway, I have a Marathon 1989 Conversion with the original ( or rebuilt ) drivetrain… Has the 8V92 DDEC and 5 Speed Auto…

Can someone provide usefull conclusive parts numbers and types of fluids? I just don’t want to look at what is installed, never know who worked on it, and what they installed. I know about the DELO Straight 40 wt….

Oil Filter, Primary, and is there bypass?

Fuel Filters, primary, and secondary, Is there a water seperator

Looks like maybe 2 smaller Coolant filters???

What type of ATF does this 5 speed use? it is right on the add mark..

I see the remote oil tank.. I kinda like that…. my ol 71 never had that, and was always dragging out oil to add a little here or there….

Air Filter? and any other filters I missed?

Should I assume this will consume oil like all other Detroit 2 cycle motors? seems like it might drip a bit here and there… On my ol 71, I custom build some boxes with filters and baffles to filter incoming air from the slober tubes to catch all the oil otherwise would be use to coat the roadways… or my toad… what say you? do I need to do this evercise again? I will be pulling a 24′ Tall trailer that matches my coach in height…

    thx

Each converter did what they deemed appropriate on fuel flters, some leaving the two Detroit filters and adding a Racor filter so the best answer for your filter question is probably to cross reference what you have with the brand you like.

The two coolant filters are actually to condition the coolant with supplemental coolant additives. If you have conventional coolant that meets the Detroit spec those need to be changed every six months, the coolant every two years. If you have extended life coolant those are likely to be blanks or shut off from the system and the coolant life is six years. You have to know the coolant you have and they are not compatible with each other so if you need to add coolant it has to be the right spec.

You likely have a single oil filter and a similar sized transmission fluid filter. Again you can cross the numbers on those to your preferred brand. I used to have all the numbers but they went with the logs when I sold my coach.

The transmission fluid for the 5 speed Allison can be ATF fluid (Dextron) or the more expensive synthetic Transynd. I think Transynd may double the change interval, but it is best to check with the Allison dealer.

I know you may not want to look at the numbers of what is installed, but the only way I could see to avoid that would be to check with Detroit and Allison and then cross their numbers.

My 8V92 was bone dry, never dripped. Engine cleaning consisted of washing off the dust. It just takes a little effort to make sure it is leak free and keep it that way. It did use some oil, maybe a couple of quarts per 1000 or 1500 miles. You are right about the oil to use. I has to be straight 40 weight that meets the Detroit spec.. Not all 40 wt oils do. I used Mobil 1240.

If my answers are wrong someone needs to correct me. I am going by memory.
