Florida to Las Vegas
We’re leaving San Antonio, Florida and heading
back to Las Vegas on Thursday, more than likely staying low to avoid as much of
the wet and cold as we can. Does any one have any “must sees, or stays” along
the way? -

San Antonio, Texas is one of our favorite spots.
If you have an opportunity to stay at Buckhorn Ranch in Kerrville, Texas by all means do it! You won’t be disappointed!

Buckhorn is a great RV park if you need somewhere to stop, but it’s in the middle of nowhere with nothing to do but visit with the neighbors. We have been there several times for rallies and it is an excellent facility.

I-10 coast to coast is likely one of the most boring drives in the US. If you don’t want to go through Atlanta and visit Stone Mountain, then you should at least stop in Pensacola and visit the Air Museum there. Totally awesome. As mentioned, San Antonios River Walk is a great place to visit but I am having a hard time thinking of anything else fun along the way. You can stay in Las Cruces, NM at the Hacienda resort but if you are in the mood to go N. on 25 from there you can visit the VLA array in Soccoro, NM. Despite not understanding much of the info, it was a great learning experience. If you want to go through Flagstaff then a visit to the Lowell Observatory is also an excellent opprotunity. You will, of course, pass by New Orleans if you need a good drinking binge! Any special interests you like that someone might be able to help you locate?

We actually love the I-10 route across the country. It is barren at times and there is a lot of lonely road but we really do like it. We are normally on a pretty close schedule so we never feel like we have enough time but we love spending time in the Pensacola, Mobile, Houston and Phoenix areas along the way.

Last year January 2013 we headed to Phoenix using I-10. On the spur of the moment after seeing about a dozen signs and a why not to each other we headed to Carlsbad Caverns, New Mexico north of I-10. Once committed and not being on the Interstate any longer I sat back and enjoyed the drive.
Jan-Feb has the least visitor count so we drove into the tour bus lot and parked very close to the cave entrance.
An amazing place and well worth the drive.

We travel 10 west several times per year. We normally Walmart it and keep going. We have stayed at Buckhorn overnight several times, but it is normally to cold or to hot there for us so we keep going. High point of trip for me is Coopers Barbecue – exit 456 in Texas – Awesome brisket. (Just off 10 and paved parking)

We got a late start and headed out Friday afternoon, but with the help of
the RoadsideAmerica.com website we were able to find the Don Garlits’ Museum of
Drag Racing, a Johnny Doughnut-seed statue and an Apollo Lunar Module. This morning we’re
starting from the Mississippi Welcome Center at the Louisiana boarder and will add
Coopers, Buckhorn and Carlsbad, NM to our trip. We may throw in some Billy the
Kid and Wyatt Earp stuff too.Thanks all!

We love Buckhorn and you won’t want to miss nearby Fredericksburg, TX. It is a touristy rendition of the original Victorian Texas farming community. Lots of shops, restaurants and attractions. Give it a Google to see what I mean.
