  • Floppy Fan Belt

Posted by Chuck & Katrina on June 5, 2022 at 9:13 am

Replaced all my fan belts about 1 & 3/4 years ago (Approx 12,000 Miles ago). Heard an unusual sound the other day and lifted the engine hatch while the eng was running. One of the two fan belts for the bus air (OTR compressor) was flopping quite a bit when the compressor was under a load. I have ordered a new set of belts for the compressor to be safe. A little less than 2 yrs and 12,000 miles seams a short time frame for the belts to be stretching already. Is this an early indication the bus air conditioning compressor is loading to much?

You have a air cylinder tensioner system?? First thing I’d check. That and the valve to control them. On my old 91 XL the seals were leaking on my cylinder and control valve allowing the belts to run a little loose.

    I don’t know?

We use our OTR ac a lot, because we live in TX, and use the bus mainly in the warmer months.

I checked my records. It’s been almost 6.5 yrs and 32,000 miles since I installed new OTR compressor belts.
The air regulator on our bus is set at 52 psi. This yr I replaced our tensioner mini airbags for the first time because they were old and leaked a little when the bus wasn’t running. I’ve replaced the bearing in the 2 OTR idlers in the last couple of yrs just because they were old.
But, thanks for reminding me, I just ordered new belts, even though the current ones look okay.

    1. Years ago you could go to an auto parts store an order a matched set of belts which were made basically back to back on same machine. Now days if you ask like I did several years ago they will look at you with the look as if you just came from Mars .Counter guy in Napa told me he never heard of such a thing ,older guy next to me just laughed told me have not made in long time,,dang it sucks to be old.Your belts even same part number probably not the same length.

2 belts in one. Cogged banded v belt BX97/02 from the Vbeltguys.com is what fits mine. Your results may vary?

Don, That is good advise. I think all of us with multiple next to each other style drives should switch over to the Multi Band style. I use the VBELTGUYS also, they have just about everything.
