  • Fiber Optic Accent Lights

Posted by June on November 21, 2015 at 11:02 pm

We have a LimoLyte II Fiber Optic Illuminator, Model LI-Dual-71-MAR, 71/71 watt/12 volt DC that lights the fiber optic ceiling accents in our Marathon coach. it has dual lights (one for the front of the coach, the other for the rear) with each light having a color wheel to change colors. The light for the rear operates for about 5 minutes then shuts down, cools off, and then comes back on. We are guessing that there is a heat safety relay, but do not have any paperwork on it. We have been on the Internet trying to find information and parts with no luck. It is located behind the refrigerator and we have gone through the access panel under the dinette seat (not easy to work on). The website shown on the illuminator (www.lumenyte.com) comes up with warnings of malware, etc. Other than calling Marathon, any ideas or suggestions?

Replace the bulb with an LED equivalent. No more heat. Problem solved, perhaps.

    Hi Ted –

I think it will be easier to replace the illuminator with newer technology than to find an LED replacement bulb. Here are pictures of the existing system.

Donald, the 50w LED replacement for the existing 75w MRI bulb is avail Home Depot, no heat and a bit brighter. Geo.

    June,

If I remember correctly on mine, the button has a dimming function as well and I think I was able to increase the brightness, I’ll have to check.

I can mine from one color to three colors but no dimming feature.

Tim … have you had the coach long enough to find the dimming feature?

    Hi Tim –

Ours is basically the same as yours – push the button once to turn on, and then a second time to start the ‘color wheel’ (I am dating myself) which rotates between the three colors and white.

    To all –

We pulled our unit out from behind the refrigerator and are giving it a thorough cleaning (dust bunnies the size of elephants) and will check out the LED bulb at Home Depot as Geo has suggested. It is interesting to note that the manufacturer states nothing greater than a 71 watt bulb, but both bulbs we pulled out were 150 watt halogen. Might be a reason why it was over-heating!

We also saw a video online on ‘renewing your fiber optics’ by cleaning up the ends. That also will help in the output.

Apparently, whoever replaced the bulbs previously, could not find the right bulbs and put in 15V 150 watt halogen bulbs. These bulbs were drawing too much juice and producing too much heat. We found that when we did a search online with the original specs, we got the same results.

We ordered LED bulbs from http://www.earthled.com:

    Part # 993-11496: 2x GREEN CREATIVE – CRISP – MR16 – 7.7 Watt – 75 Watt
Equal – High CRI – Dimmable – Suitable for Fully Enclosed Fixtures – Narrow
    Flood / Flood – 3000K / 25 Degrees / 1 Piece for $ 17.18 each

The bulbs come with a 3-year warranty. Based on using 3 hours a day usage, these bulbs should last 22.8 years!

These focused right on the fiber optic cables. Seems just as bright as the halogen, but are drawing only a fraction of the power and little heat. No more lights out!
