Ferry Ride
The post about the Alaska ferry ride reminded me of my own little ferry ride adventure. We had just spent several weeks in Canada completing the Lake Superior Cirlce Tour and where on our way back to the States. My sister in law suggested that we take the scenic road along Lake Ontario towards Kingston. The scenic road goes by the name of Loyalist Parkway / Rt. 33. This is a very nice narrow 2 lane highway along the lake with lots to see and lots to capture your attentiion.
What I did not pay attention to was the route and where it was taking us. We had our “Oh Shit” moment in Glenora, where, eventually, we came to the end of the road. Literally! See the photo here below.
There were 2 options. Try turning around or take the ferry across to the other side which is clearly visible.
Turning around would have been difficult and we would rather continue on this “road”. At this time, we were the first in line to go onto the ferry.
So I walked up to the dock and, pointing the finger back at Olivia, asked the dock master “what about that?”
He assured me that the bus was not a problem at all as long as I met the maximum height restriction.
So on to the ferry we went.
We had no problem with the height restriction.
The ride across takes less than 5 minutes. Getting onto and off of the ferry takes a while longer. Once on the other side, the road continues as if there was never a break.
This was an exciting intermission to our trip and it is highly recommended. We did the trip in late September and the traffic along the Loyalist Parkway was light. There were many places where you could slow down to let traffic pass you or where to pull off.
If I had known about the end of the road before we ever got there, I am not so sure I would have taken this route.
Sometimes, though, a (nice) surprise can add to the excitement of a bus trip.
