  • Featherlite Coach Trailer Lift Problems

Posted by Jerry on August 23, 2016 at 8:25 pm

I have a Featherlite Stacker Coach Trailer #4950. The lift will not lift a car, it will barely lift 2 Harley’s on the lift. The capacity of the lift is 4000 lbs. My HHR doesn’t weigh that.

The lift moves slow, and jerks going up or down.

I have 2 Group 31 Batteries which pass a load test for each. The pump is full of fluid, the pump motor sounds fine.

I have let it up and down several times, thinking it may have air in the system.

The motor is grounded to the chassis by being bolted down.

Anyone have similar problems, or any ideas?

    Jerry

Has it ever bucked before when going up or down?

All I can think of is connect your recharge lead or put a charge on the batteries and try it.

It’s a simple system but the bucking concerns me.

Your sure the hydrolic hose isn’t pinched? You can take off the service cover in front of the wheelweel and look.

If charging doesn’t work call service in Cresco tomorrow.

Bernie , I bought this trailer a few months ago, I have not tried to load a car until now, just HD’s.

I have owned several others, never a problem like this.

    I’ll call Cresco tomorrow.

the only other thing I can think of is maybe a post is out of plumb and it’s binding going up and down

I don’t know if this is equivalent but I have had what sounds like the same situation on an overloaded dump box.

It would raise slowly a short distance then make a loud noise while it stopped, and then slowly resume raising and then make a noise and stop, repeating this all the way up. I know I was overloaded and assumed the stoppage was the over pressure relief valve releasing the excess pressure.

I would expect the heavier the load the slower the movement as normal, but the stoppage as an indicator something is wrong.

While the lift is going up with a load measure the voltage at the lift pump motor. It may be a bad connection, either on the + or – side.

I checked those already Mikee, the front pump for the jack on the tongue of the trailer works perfect, and it is wired to the same place as the lift pump.

I’ll look some more, a friend locally says it’s probably the pump.

Well, I fixed my problem with the lift in the trailer. It was not electrical at all. It was a failing pulley cluster pin that holds 4 pulleys together in a bracket connected to the Hydraulic ram. The pin was coming out, and was bent, and possibly was caused by loose cables getting out of place.

the pin on the bottom had popped off the snap ring, and let the pin creep up, and was rubbing where the black marks are, bottom 2 pulleys were just grinding away..I called AXE Equipment, Stinger lifts, and they were very helpfull. They sent me a new style pulley cluster, and all other pulleys with new bearings instead of bushings. I replaced them all, and now it works like brand new, and will pick up any car or anything.

So you guys with trailer lifts, pay attention to your cables and pulleys, even though I had to drill out about 200 rivets to get the covers off.
