  • Fastening subfloor

Posted by Kevin on September 16, 2020 at 3:50 pm

I have an 84 xl mth and developed leaks in the rear windows which did some significant damage resulting in having to remove subfloor. Prevost mechanically fastened the subfloor over loose sheets of aluminum and into cross members and longitudinal metal. Looks like phillips head but with corrosion couldn’t really see threads and i originally thought riveted. Ended up cutting around every fastener and removing the damaged panels and cutting off the fasteners.

Now it’s reassembly time and I’m struggling and hoping for suggestions. The crossmembers the subfloor screws into are too thick for #10 or #12 self drilling screws from Home Depot or Lowes to work. Adding to that the subfloor is 1″ and with a self drilling screw to get a threaded length long enough to engage the metal means going up to a 2 1/2″ screw which bottoms out because the crossmembers are tubular. The only progress I’ve made is by drilling, tapping, and using flat head machine screws. Very tedious. With screws spaced 6″, I’m looking at well over 100. Any ideas on how Prevost fastened originally or other ideas on a faster method than I’m using? (Bonding won’t work with all the different layers).

That sounds like how we put a new wood deck on a flatbed truck and likely how you will have to proceed – slowly and tediously – hammer drill, then self-drilling screw to drive it home… do 10 hammer drills and 10 screws, then do it again… and again… and again… at least it’s not 105F in the shade.
