  • Fan clutch issue on newer coach

Posted by Chris on September 6, 2017 at 10:41 pm

Running in Montana and notice temp rising. Stop coach. Read posts about fan issues and head back to check things out. Go through all the steps. Fan spins freely with ignition off. Ignition on with driver air on, fan spins freely. No noise from fan etc. Must be a clutch issue. Let’s break off the relay tab……Oh there is no relay tab to break off with a multiplex coach. Call Jeff, he’s not sure where to look. Call Prevost they want me to drive it 30 miles to an RV dealer – it’s overheating not going to happen. Look through the rear compartment electrical markings and see a 3 amp fuse marked fan clutch. Surely the fan isn’t controlled by a 3 amp mini fuse. Pull it and it is blown. Replace it, fan runs, temp normal, drive 300 miles no issue.

So on a multiplex coach there is no tab to break just a 3 amp mini fuse to check. And yes when I’m back to TN I’ll investigate to see if there is a brewing issue with the fan clutch. Humble number 2 on this trip. Learning everyday.

Chris is getting so good at this we may need to put him on the panel at the seminar.

Great information, I’ll add that to our tidbit topic. Where’s the fuse located Chris and a picture would help?

Chris is making us aware of a very important point that is hard to remember.

When questions are asked we who try to respond have a difficult time providing accurate answers and suggestions just because the internet is not the same as being at the coach, but also because we are not always thinking of variations in our coaches that make some advice invalid.

With the number of multiplex coaches increasing we also have to try to keep that in mind when responding. Even professionals like the folks at Prevost and the converters have trouble keeping track of these important variations.

For future reference, my vintage also does not have any relays on which we would break off a tab (85) to lock the fan electronically. And where you have a 3 amp fuse, we have a 3 amp circuit breaker.

Couple weeks ago we climbed a 10% grade and saw 220 on coolant gauge and 300 on tranny. Nothing happened except for the pucker. But sitting at American fleet now for a tune up/run the overhead with engine out. They ohm tested the electronics of the fan to find no issues. Without knowing whether the clutch friction material is shot, we are putting in a new fan clutch, new thermostats, new water filter, and switching to organic acid technology coolant. Told them I wanted to feel better about cooling capacity.

There must be a relay somewhere as I too can’t see 3 amps running that fan. I put a post on “Ask Prevost”.

    Tom,

I’ll get get some pictures in the morning. The fuse is in the rear electrical compartment on the passenger side. There is a small black plastic automobile like fuse box on the right side rear wall. The fuse number as I recall was r66 but I will double check in the morning. Fuse is a 3 amp mini auto fuse.
