exhaust?
noticed a little exhaust from the generator. Keep it serviced, but don’t run it that much. Most usage is some.dry camping at the race track. Started it up to make sure its okay( been sitting for about 2-3 months after a service). Have a little smoke out of one exhaust pipe. works fine, oil is fine. Just a little stinky.
anything to worry about?

Oh, should add that I only have exhaust out of the passanger side exhaust on the rear of the coach. The engine exhaust is under the radiator on the driver side. Have two exhaust coming out of the rear. Not sure what the driver side is for? Maybe webasto? but generator only exhausts our of the passanger side pipe.

If you have the Kubota/Kohler 20kW genset, don’t worry about a little black smoke. They tend to run a little rich when they are under load. Check the air filter and the charge hose from the turbo to the intake fir cracks or leaks.
The exhaust for the genset runs across the bus and out the passenger side. The left side exhaust is the Webasto. You will find it in the key-locked bay on the driver’s side just forward of the radiator door.

Charles , load the gen up turn all airs on it likes it when it’s working and smoke will go away , they do not like small loads

The signature lines of Charles and Jackson hold the key to exhaust location. Both have similar coaches so they are correct with respect to how their gensets and Webastos are exhausted. Other Liberty coaches and other conversions may not share the same locations.

Onan says to run their generators at 50% load for several hours monthly to prevent moisture buildup in the electrical portion and to keep the diesel part in good condition.
I would think that is reasonably good advice for any diesel generator. Emergency generators for hospitals, etc. also have a regular run and load requirement.

It has always been good to run a generator with a heavy load. The problem is a lot of our generators are 20KW which is roughly 167 amps. To reach the 50% level we would have to have a steady 83 amp load (split between two legs) and that is not as easy as it sounds.
On my coach I would have to run all 4 Cruiseairs (26 amps each leg) plus I would need to have the HW tank drawing current, plus the microwave, plus the coffee maker, water pump, and a bunch of lighting. As can be seen for a long run at 50% load we would have to work at loading the electrical circuits. I may not be able to load my generator consistently at that level, but I do load it as much as practical when I do run the generator which is barely 25% to 30% of its capacity.

BTW, I talked to Mark and you have DDEC V. If you want to borrow the reader you can tell if the EGR is on after the Ugly Fix is installed.

About 30 years ago the warehouse manager’s office was about 4 down the hall from me. The manager had a horseshoe haircut, you know hair around the paremeter and nothing on top. In fact he said that bald men were the only people who could hear it snow.
One day he came to my office with tears streaming down his cheeks, plopped into one of my chairs and, gasping for breath, told me this story.
He said a salesman was in his officefor over an hour and he just could not get rid of him. Telling him that we did not need any of his products at the moment, etc. The manager said that the salesman then said “Just one more thing and I will get out of your hair.” The manager then jumped up, slamed his hands on his desk and yelled “HAIR?, HAIR? WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY HAIR??” He said the saleman grabed his sample case and took off down the hall and by the time the manager got to the front door, the salesman was already in his car, backing out of the parking lot.
With my hair, or lack thereof, I have waited for 30 years to use that line and, darn it, it never happens, but I am still waiting.
But, don’t you dare call me bald because I still have 7 hairs on top. I count them every morning. While true a couple have fallen off, I found them on my pillow and have super glued them back in place, so NEVER call me bald!!!

Thanks for confirming I will see some exhaust when not at higher load and for validating the thoughts on which exhaust is for what.
Air, Fuel, Oil filters are all changed this spring (and last spring before that) as was the oil changed and generator serviced. The hoses all look good and the turbo hose is new (about 1.5 years old). Will put more load on it and see if it reduces the smoke any (it’s not like it’s a lot, but…).

to get enough load we have plugged in a coach on the buddy plug and ran the Kohler gen to achieve a load heavy enough…8 cruise air units….

Roof heat pumps, toe kick heaters, AquaHot, and a couple of small cube heaters will do nicely to load my 12.5K Onan over 50%.

Dang, based on Jeff’s trouble shooting technigues, the cost of ownership just increased 2x! Where am I going to park my second prevost so I can trouble shoot load capabilities of my generator on my first prevost? 🙂
