  • Engine won’t start -Check Trans Light on

Posted by Thomas on September 7, 2015 at 1:05 pm

I am at a RV Park in Littleton NH and my coach will not start. It does not turn over and the batteries are new. The check trans light is on in the dash. Anyone who has an idea of what to do please help.

It will help the helpers if you indicate the year of chassis, length, converter, type of engine (Series 60 vs 8V92) and type of chassis (XL vs H-340). Also consider opening up your email address so you can receive emails directly from the helpers.

Do you get any kind of a “click” when the key is turned? Open the engine bay, have someone turn the key while you listen.

I had brand new batteries in May of 2014. In October of 2014 the bus wouldn’t start. After chasing three other things first, one of the four new Interstate batteries had a dead cell and the bus wouldn’t start because of that.

Can’t offer any advice on the Check Trans Lite.

I’m sure that help will be on its way soon.

    What Dick said.

But generally start with the basics……..check battery voltage. I would expect to see no lower than 24.5 volts

If battery power is good turn the key on and try a rear start. Select “rear” on the toggle switch on the RH side of the rear electrical box and push the button.

From that point on it is a step by step process to find what’s going on.

    Tom:

You might give one of our advertisers a call and they may be able to advise you on the Transmission Light.

Good luck getting it to start.

BTW, I doubt a check transmission light prevents a start. I think the stop engine light will do that, and if that is the case it could be a low coolant sensor, low oil pressure or high oil pressure or high oil temp all depending on age of coach.

Without what you have its hard but if it’s the old starter it maybe the starter or parts on it or the solenoid on the starter they are known to go bad

First I would like to thank all of the people who replied to my thread. I am surprised and delighted at the fast response. A mechanic came out to the RV Park and determine it was the starter solenoid. He was able to jump it and get the engine started. I drove back to Hampton NH and the coach is now at National Wrecker Service in Portsmouth. It looks like you can’t buy just the starter solenoid. You must buy the complete starter in order to keep the economy going. I will update again when I get the final bill. Thanks again for your help.

If you can take the solenoid a part the inside wire is usually broken you can repair that, maybe

National Wrecker in Portsmouth NH found a solenoid and will have it installed today. The cost is estimated to be $250. I will let everyone know what the final bill is.

Thanks again for all the help.

One lesson we all need to learn is that every repair does not involve a tow truck, new major parts, or a lot of time to fix relatively speaking.

Some repairs need not happen until it is convenient, such as at home using your trusted mechanic. Some repairs are simple and need to be done right away because ignoring the need on some simple fixes can tend to create a cascade of problems. Some repairs have to be made immediately.

The point is we now have just shy of 2200 members. The collected experience is incredible. If you encounter an issue it may actually be best if you use the resources here to at least get some opinions. Not all the answers on here are going to be correct, but a lot will be valid considerations.

As this thread illustrates a bad starter may not be a bad starter, but a bad part of a starter and a rather inexpensive repair as opposed to buying an entire starter. To use the bad slide seal as another example a large leak will cripple a coach because air cannot be built up, but it is not a disaster if you know how to turn off the air going to the slide seal

The best way to take advantage of your membership in PC is to ask questions. Asking a question does a couple of things. First, it may provide the exact information you need. But it also provides a piece of information you and other members may need to have in their memory bank so if they have an issue they may remember it was discussed and all they have to do is pull the thread back up.

But when you ask questions, please, pretty please, put your coach information in your signature line. A correct answer for a Marathon may have absolutely nothing to do with a Country Coach, or what might be correct for an XL may have nothing to do with an H3.

One thought if you are not near a Prevost or Detroit Deisel service center would anyone consider going to a local charter bus company that has Prevost for Charter services and talk to them about servicing your rig with them? If they work on their own Prevost and DD maybe they would consider working on a private rig when time permits. I have no idea if this is even worth consideration but thought I would add this thought to the discussion. Thanks to all for continuing to enlighten me on technical issues. Best wishes Michael

    Michael,

Not only did I consider it but I did it. We are in St. Louis and we have built a relationship with a bus company in Washington Mo about 30 mins west of us and they have been great. They know their stuff and have been super helpful and reasonable. They indicated they have slow times where they would be super happy to do PM work and have worked me in for a couple of quick things that need immediate attention. I guess it all depends on the location but in my case it’s been a huge plus having someone so close

That is great news; here in Green Bay and Madison Wisconsin we have two very good and fairly good size Charter companies and i was wondering if they might work. Now that I have found out some positive experiences I feel better about approaching them when I get my dream Coach. Thanks to all.
