  • Engine turns over, will not start

Posted by Ronald on February 8, 2019 at 4:22 pm

I have been getting ready for travel to Prevost Expo so I have had the oil changed, fuel filters changed, etc. New drive tires were to be installed today. Planned to leave tomorrow or Sunday.

I was scheduled to have tires installed this morning. However, the coach will not start. It turns over, but will not start. I have 26 volts showing on start up. Turn the key, glow lights check, tach check, transmission flash and beep, and turn key to start, and it turns over but does not start.

The only change since the oil service and fuel filters on Saturday is installation of a new air filter cartridge. I started and ran her for three hours on Saturday, an hour on Sunday and Monday, and after the filter change on Tuesday for 30 minutes to check air assembly was tight.

I will appreciate any and all ideas for me to check. PM me, or if you want to talk with me, I can get to the coach to try what you recommend.

Did you check sight glass for coolant. Our former XL 40 Beaver Prevost was finicky about coolant level in tank. Won’t start unless site glass was 3/4 or more Then replaced sensor in tank bottom all was good

are both battery switches over chassis batteries in”on” position ? Just asking

New fuel filter? Was it primed? Won’t start unless you make sure the fuel filter is primed properly. Also there maybe a screw valve on the fuel intake side of the fliter that wasn’t turned back on, allowing fuel to flow to the filter, then to injection system.

Suspect we think now after re-reading could be fuel filter seal. The primary on our previous Beaver XL 40 8V92 powered bus had two rubber “O” rings. Trying to be neat to not drip fuel putting filter on, I didn’t see the inner rubber seal fell off. Presto, eventual loss of prime

You also may have the wrong fuel filter…

    Fuel,

Make sure you re getting it.

Check CB 19,20, 21, make sure they have not tripped. They are DDEC. If you are getting fuel it could be DDEC related.

Thanks, everyone, for advice on what to check. She started on first turn this morning. I drove her for a solid two hours around Greenville. She is running great.

Plan to empty and refill fresh water this afternoon. I will have to wait until Monday morning after new drive tires are installed to make our way to Palm Beach.

We are excited to be making this trip and getting to meet fellow Prevost we owners. It is such a small and special group to be a part of.

Ron, Did you figure out what caused the crank no start?

I did not. Only thing different last night was putting a charger on the batteries.

    Ron,

I will share a little secret. A number of people have experienced no starting when the coach engine spins. In a lot of the cases the cause has been the equalizer is not doing its job of maintaining the relationship between the 24 and 12 volt chassis batteries. Before you used the charger did you measure both the 12 and 24 volt terminals on the chassis batteries, and if so was the 12 volt side low, like 9 volts?

One battery shows 13.1, three batteries show 12.8.

Would not start this morning. Same situation for turns over but does not start. I did notice this morning that only one of the two Vanner 60-60 equalizers has a green light.

I am putting a charger on it again to charge for several hours.

You have to measure voltage at the chassis 12 volt post and at the 24 volt post.

Look at the diagram on the door and measure where Prevost picks up the two voltages from the chassis batteries. Low voltage on the 12 volt side will prevent the ECM from working.

Having said that the other question is how old are your batteries and do you have a problem with them holding voltage? Even if one equalizer is out on a 2 equalizer set up the remaining one should still keep the 12 volt side charged, but bad batteries will be an issue.

I will check, John. Inner panels of the engine doors have been replaced so I will have to check the manual for a diagram.

Batteries are date 02/2017. I purchased new and installed. Never have had an issue with holding a charge.

    Ron,

Diagram photo sent to your email.

Thanks for sending the diagrams. I will give them a good look.

We had planned our Expo trip from the first notice. Tammie and I will now miss the Prevost Expo. New tires to be installed this morning before we were to hit the road for West Palm Beach. Alas, not to be.

Once I get it running, and consistently turning on and off again, we will make our way to Charleston, or Huntington Beach State Park.

    Thanks again for the email.

    Ron
