engine start up
Ok, here is one of those questions most of you will shake your head and say “Really, he didn’t know that?”. Every diesel that I have ever owned has had a light on the dash that stays on while the glow plugs heat up and you are supposed to wait for the light to go out before starting the engine. There is no such light on our Prevost. Im not mechanical at all when it comes to engines. Does the Detroit not have glow plugs? Do you not have to wait for anything after you turn the key on before starting?

Hey Dean, Don’t know the technical reason why but my 91 8v92 does not wait. Just crank up and run. In my school bus driving days the 330 cumming didn’t have a glow plug wait either. Unlike our coaches when I use to crank up the school bus it was ready to roll within a minute or two. Took the air system about 60 seconds to be ready to go. Guess I never questioned it … kind of like if my wife is not asking me to do something ….. Don’t question it! LOL!

Dean, your engine does not have glow plugs. Instead you have a block heater or the ability to warm the engine via the Websto.
The engine block heater switch is in the electric box in the kitchen area. For the Webasto to heat the engine the valves to and from the engine to the Webasto have to be open.
However, it is a good idea to wait for the CEL and SEL lights to go out, not because they are heating glow plugs, but because the engine computer is doing its thing to get ready to run.

Generally big displacement motors will not have glow plugs. The cubic centimeters of air space in the cylinder is to great to make them effective at heating the air to make fire.
