At what outdoor temperature do you use your engine pre-heat?

I use mine at 40 degrees or below. I was told by two entertainer drivers that 40 was the ballpark figure they used on their buses. It seems to have worked for me the last five winters but I am interested in what others do.

I’ve always used the engine pre-heat at anything below 40 degrees.

    Rod,

While pre-heat will get it running (using pre-heat we could start our 8V92 when it was as low as -10F if it was on all night)but as long as you have Webasto rather than using the preheat, fire that up an hour or two in advance of start up for a more uniformly warm engine. Just make sure the valves for the engine are open. It not only warms the engine, but it warms the interior of the coach so you are not chilly while the coach warms up.

The true answer however is to avoid the cold.

Jon is right, the true answer is avoid the cold.

One caution regarding using the Webasto to warm your engine in cold weather:

With the engine pre-heat valves open, you can create a very hot heat source directly below your bed if you run the Webasto to heat the interior of the bus over night. We found this to be too warm for comfortable sleeping, so I made sure those valves were turned off over night.

As Jon suggested, just open them a no hour or so before you’re ready to start the engine in cold temps.

I had a small Webasto’s installed that I use to preheat the engine below about 40 degrees and also use it to heat water in my water heater. It uses very little fuel and is great when boon docking. My main Webasto’s heats the coach with 4 zones ( water bay, living room, kitchen bath and bedroom). The small Webasto’s I use to preheat the engine and hot water can be programmed to come on at a specific time so you have hot water when you get up and the engine is ready to go if it is cold outside. Takes about 30 minutes to get the engine from 30 degrees to slightly over 100.
