Look up a Detroit Diesel dealer like United Engines or Stewart & Stevenson… they can do the work. They are expensive per hour but my experience is that they do more per hour and the costs are justified.

Doing the “overhead” means valve, injector height and jake adjustment. It requires removal of the valve cover and access to the valves/injectors which is not generally easy on our coaches.

My understanding is that there is no hard rule/requirement after the first “overhead” is done around 60,000 miles unless you notice a significant performance or fuel mileage loss.

Make sure if you do the “overhead” you have a plan for removing the engine cover. The valve cover on an XLII cannot be removed without doing that and some converters built the closet or storage drawers over the cover and then carpeted over it.

I agree with Jon. I have now done the tune up / overhead on both of my coaches. The first one was the 2008 XLII and the last was my current 2011 Liberty.

I had to take apart the steps going into the closet on the XLII to get the floor plate off so the valve cover would come off enough for the shop to do the job. All the screws were covered by carpet and hard to find. The Liberty did not require any inside work to get the job done.

Both coaches had about 65000 miles on then at the time they were done, and both needed it badly. The XLII had very loose valves, and also loose injector hold down clamps that had allowed one injector to back out enough to get compression into the fuel passages. We replaced that injector when doing the job. The 2011 Liberty also had very loose valves, but the hold down clamps were fine. The Detroit spec calls for the adjustment at 60,000 miles.

Both ran much better after getting it done. The Liberty picked up about .5 mpg too.

I keep reading about people who say it is not necessary, but I disagree. Any Detroit shop can do it if you can give them access to get the valve cover off (on the XLII). Should run about $750 depending on the shop rate.

Just for comparison on a non EGR engine……

Our bus had a serious engine oil leak in the front. Repair required bumper to be removed and the engine pulled back. The engine exterior was cleaned and the oil leak repaired. While the engine was in plain site the rocker cover was removed and the lifters adjusted.

We travel at 65 mph most often on cruise control. Performance is real smooth and to me feels like the sweet spot.

Our mileage has been 7.3 mpg average and even better with a good tail wind, pulling our 2010 Acadia 90 % of the time at 4800 lbs.

through the bedroom floor since my conversion is an orphan, I can not figure out how to access it without tearing up the carpet. The other option is sliding out the engine!! Any suggestions?
