Electrical Shutdown
Posted by Archived on August 6, 2018 at 6:47 pmThere are a lot of reasons why we may have to shut down the electrical systems on a coach, ranging from changing out house batteries to doing service on the systems.
While we intend to cover and discuss the electrical system in more detail at the upcoming seminar it is very important all owners know and understand almost every coach requires a specific sequence of steps and doing a shut down in a different sequence can have serious and expensive consequences.
We all have different conversions so the shut down procedures are going to be converter specific. Usually the owner’s manual or a placard will list the procedure, but if you do not have either make sure you have a copy of the procedure available so if you ever have to shut the coach down, or you have a technician that needs the coach shut down that it is done correctly.
I am not overstating the potential consequences when I say doing a shut down in an out of order sequence can damage thousands of dollars worth of the electrical syste,

I have not seen anything in my 2006 Country Coach XLII manuals about a shutdown procedure.
Anyone out there have the procedure for our obviously superior Country Coach conversions….

One thing for certain is never shut off the battery master switch unless you have shut down all shore or generator power to the inverters.

Well I went back to the “firehose” for another drink. I was reading the Prevost manual , found what I needed in the “Marathon” manual;)
I also can’t wait for Oct. to get here, but like Les, I have read and read manuals and can’t find any instruction to shut down for 2000

The folks from Inverter Service are planning to participate in the October seminar and we can plan on them providing some very good advice on all aspects of using and caring for our inverters.
The information they will provide applies to all coaches regardless of converter, and will not only apply to a complete coach shutdown, but how and when to power down systems when connecting or disconnecting from power.
If they are able to help everyone understand how to protect the inverters during various actions relating to the coach we all can avoid very expensive and unnecessary repair or replacement costs.

Not for a Country Coach, but Mr. Liberty told me the sequence some years ago. The four occasions where I needed to do this were: swap in new house batteries, swap in new inverters, reset inverters, slide the engine out/ in.
The order of these steps matter:
1. No shore power
2. No watchdog/autostart
3. Shut off both inverters at the remote
4. Shut off breaker for battery charger 1 and battery charger 2 at the control panel inside
5. Shut off master switch outside that negates the connection between house batteries and inverters
So this is how we do it for the elegant gramma lady. Country Coach will surely be different.

Hello,
I will be replacing my house batteries this weekend. I have a 1998 Featherlight Vantare with two Trace Inverters and replacing my batteries with 8 4D life lines. I need advice on the shutdown / start up procedure.
Step One
1) Turn inverters off
2) Turn DC Man off
3) Turn off all AC breakers
Step Two (outside inverter bay Vantare Panel)
1) Pull Distribution Panel Button to OFF
2) Leave Alternator Disconnect Switch
3) Turn off 24 Volt feeder breaker to Inverter 1 and 2
4) Turn off inverter output breakers
Step 3 (Water Bay)
1) Turn off shore power breaker

Probably the wrong thread to ask this question, but I am confused.
Jon states 3 Prevosts owned, Tom 7 Prevosts owned. Yet they always talk about how long they last and how good they are. If this is true why have they had so many? Do they break them, wreck em or what??
Plus how expensive are they to maintain, Jon grows his own food due to lack of funds, Tom sells batteries, TPMS systems, and collects dues money and won’t share with Jon.
Are they misleading us?

I remember when I used to like Mikee.
Now it appears he is a trouble maker.
Coach #1 (15 years)had a fire in it, and since Prevost took so long to rebuild it and since we could not bear to be without a coach we bought coach #2 (8 1/2 years). Right around that time we had started PC and Tom promised me he would share dues, so feeling wealthy due to the planned new income coach #3 (now 8 years) was purchased because it had slides. Unlike Tom if my wife wants slides, she gets slides. Right away.
The dues money never showed up so to survive I have been forced to grow my own food.
That’s my story and I am sticking to it.

Jon what were the models you owned in past? what was source of fire in your first coach?
A thought for signature line. Listing location would be informative. Most list their coach type and toad.

All coaches were Liberty conversions on XL chassis
1987, 40 foot, 8V92
1997, 45 foot, Series 60, non-slide
2006, 45 foot XLII, Series 60, 2 slides
The fire was the result of relying on a Carrier corporation service center to change out the over the road A/C compressor. We were pressed to get down to FL for my wife’s mother’s 85th birthday, and I had no time to make the switch myself. Big mistake.
The replaced the failed compressor but did not re-install the unloader valves which limit A/C system internal pressure. The coach got 400 miles from Knoxville to Jasper County SC when a trucker told me I was on fire.
Apparently the compressor seal had blown out from high A/C system pressure and a string of events led to the ignition of the spray of high pressure Freon coming from the failed seal and at that point it became an impressive blow torch which did substantial damage in the passenger side engine area, melting 10 batteries, the tail lights, and burning up all wiring and cables.
