Electrical Pnuematic air control
Posted by Jeff on January 7, 2014 at 9:47 pmIt seems as i engine air compressor is not engaging. I have 1990 XL 40. Can get no power to norgren valve solenoids. I think these are controlled by the relays above the engine in the box above the engine. I am unable to verify this issue. I do need to locate a purchase place for the 24v 8pin relay. Tomorrow I will supply more information. Buss will not build air nor raise. Tag axel warning blaring. No air as well. No brake air.

If you have no air, it is not a Norgren problem. The engine air compressor is not controlled by the Norgren valves. You have another problem, possibly the governor or something else related to the compressor itself, or even the dryer could be the culprit.

Notice your in south. Or at least your signature line is. Could be just ice in control line back to governer on air compressor. If I were doing parts changing or eary first I would bet on governer on compressor(after it is above freezing for awhile) under a $25 item on back of compressor. hard to get to on your 8-V92 but not impossible..Don’t see anything elect that can prevent air build up to wet tank /brake system . The wet tank is first tank in system. Warm is your friend here and is prob a 90% prob cure then make sure you drain your air tanks regulary and service your air dryer…. If engine is running it should warn bus rear compartment up to compressor area.. there is a shield before the air dryer though that would keep engine heat away from warming the small control line from it back to the governer on the air compressor…

Mark and Bob are responding as I would.
The post was unclear so it would help to know if the two dash gauges are showing any air pressure because their responses assume you build no air pressure, and my reading of the post seems to be that you are not getting pressure into the suspension which is what the Norgrens control. I know you said no air pressure, but there is nothing that a relay or Norgrens have anything to do with.

Please excuse my initial post. Trying to type with a dog in your lap is of no help.
I have two problems, I think. Problem 1; No air building in bus system. No pressure indications on dash guages. I will consede this is probably related to weather and freezing temps. Problem 2 is no power to level low norgren solinoid valves. When switch is in road position there should be power on one valve. Move the switch to lower front, lets say, no power as I select dump or raise. I am unsure where the power to this system is supplied from. I beleive from the box above engine. As I also stated I am in need of one 24v relay. I do not have the number with me now.
The good news is that I have no air I really dont need the valves to work.

Did this problem just start? Think most or air goodies (Coach ride height and leveling) are controlled with valves and solenoids under drivers feet. No air gotta be with air compressor or related tanks if nothing showing on dash air guages. Hear any major air leaks? Just curious cause I don’t know about air system and let Prevost handle mine. Sometimes I don’t think they know about these older coaches like ours. Mine has been in and out many times with same problems.

Obviously you need to get the bus to generate air. Nothing else counts until that is resolved. governor, pressurre relief, dryer all bear scrutiny)
Once you are building air and the engine driven compressor is filling all systems (primary, secondary and auxiliary) then you can move to the other issues. When you say you have no electric to the Norgren solenoids can we assume you mean the solenoid stack in the sterer compartment? Do you have the key on? Is it one solenoid that is not getting power, or all of them regardless of how the level low controls are placed?
May we also assume you have an unmodified level low as installed by Prevost or has the system been modified such as having an HWH?
As to the relays, I have found Prevost is the best source, but relays are relays are relays so you can likely get a replacement at place like WW Grainger or any electrical supply house. Depending on the type you might even find one at Radio Shack, but they are de-emphasizing that part of their business.

ground on relay stack. in steer compartment. also ck voltage stamped on coils some converters screwed with that.. if stock center relay key on should be supplied with voltage.. With or without air supply.

I suspect the solenoid stack is a 4 valve and I think the second down is the driving valve.

For elect drawing go to prevoscar.com use the last letter of your serial number and last four numbers for example mine is W6553 look under tech publications wiring diagrams.. it will give you everything you need to figure all prevost electrical feeds and air line feeds also…. no converter mods! good luck… free to down load
