  • eBay was good to me again tonight …

Recently, my driver / front in-dash radio stopped working. No clue what the problem is. Everything else in the system is working fine. Except, the radio. As the radio is a component of a more elaborate Alpine system which includes DVD navigation (never used it) as well as a motorized 7 inch screen (for the nav but used only for the backup and sideview cameras), I decided no sense in trying to have it repaired because that would cost more than simply buying a new radio. Furthermore, the system dates back to 2006, so there are no replacement parts.

I went for a Pioneer DEH-X8600BH. Not only is it equipped with Bluetooth, it also comes with “Siri Eyes Free” iPhone telephone interface. This means, I can answer phone calls handsfree through the radio and use the Siri interface to give commands to the phone. For instance, “Call Jon”.

For $165 I have a new, sophisticated radio replacing the 2006 Alpine installation.

The devil is in the details because, in order to uninstall the Alpine in-dash components, I had to remove the dashboard cover to get at the wiring harness, assorted system cables and the backsides of the radio and the monitor.

By the time it was all done and all cables carefully removed, 5 hours had gone by!

But, everything is wide open now and the installation of the new radio is going to be a breeze.

Well, getting back to the subject, I took photos of all items and put them on eBay. I clearly stated that the radio head unit is defective.

It took barely an hour to sell the components, cables and wiring harness. I am $810.00 richer … !

    Seajet,

It must have been crammed-packed full of copper!

    Wow, you certainly lucked out!

    Safe Travels,

Mr. Mark, the explanation for the sale must be found somewhere in the fact, that these Alpine components were a very expensive system back in 2006. Some quick researched earlier today brought up the fact, that this system sold for about $3,000 in those days. And, that does not even include the optional amplifiers.

I exchanged a few emails with the buyer. Apparently, he is very familiar with the system and knows how to go about repairing it. He also informed me that he has a spare head unit. In that case, all he needs to do is to swap out mine for his and he should have a pretty good system.

On the other hand, the fact still is, that this is 2006 stuff and technology has much improved since that time.

But, so what. He is happy and so am I. We both got something out of this deal.

And just to make a note,

I was kidding as I am not a techy person. I’m just glad that it all worked out for you.
