  • Driving in NYC

The trip I’m about to leave on included three nights in NYC. We’re actually staying and keeping the buses in Secaucus, NJ, but the guys want me to deliver them into the city in the bus. Obviously I don’t feel comfortable about this. Have any of you ever taken you 45′ coach into NYC?

my company runs NYC everyday from NH, I will tell you it’s tight on the lanes, WATCH YOUR MIRRORS!! Your best bet is run your routes in your head and on paper before you perform it, if your in the wrong lane it might be a bit before you can get there, NYC transit runs Prevost X3-45 and we run our H3-45, keep calm and all will be well

The Holland Tunnel has a 12 foot 6 inch height limit and an 8 foot width limit. The Lincoln Tunnel has a 13 foot height limit and an 8 foot 6 inch width limit. The George Washington Bridge will get you there but it is a long trip depending on where you are going in Manhattan. Finding a place to park in the city is very difficult for a 45 foot bus and the police are typically not very understanding for blocking traffic.

As a kid I lived in Secaucus and often I went into NYC. Going from Secaucus through the Lincoln Tunnel brings you through what we called the “tunnel cut” just prior to entering the tunnel. It was narrow for buses at the time which were 8′ so with an 8’6″ coach you are going to be challenged to stay in the lane. You will share the road with buses that go that way every day and those drivers are used to passing with inches to spare. You don’t want to go through Jersey City to use the Holland Tunnel.

Just be on your “A” game, keep right and you will be fine. Then all you have to do is figure out where you have to deliver your passengers and the best way to get them there. Once in the city you will be OK.
