  • Drive axle weight rating

Posted by Dave on May 18, 2017 at 8:51 am

I know what the maximum weight is on my steer and tag. What is maximum weight on a 2006 H drive axle?

There should be a Prevost data plate with all that info someplace in your coach. Should show axle weights, gvwr, and tire pressures.

Ive seen the tags Mark mentioned mostly on the inside jam of the entry door where the lock pin is.

On all my coaches the axle weight ratings are on a metal plate located about even with the drivers seat bottom cushion secured to the sidewall.

If you have no plate the shop manual for your coach lists that information. If I were to guess it is going to be around 22,000.

My tag is on the door of the service bay below the driver. 2001 H = 22,500 for drive

Interesting. I was under the impression many major roads (Ohio Turnpike?) had a 20,000# max axle weight rating. Obviously an axle rated for 22,500 may actually be carrying less weight. Don’t know what the rating is on my drive, but I do know the actual weight flirts with 20,000.

My Prevost information plate on the service bay door says max is 22,500 and actual with full fuel, full water, empty black and gray is 20,685

    Thanks for the information.

When you are weighing your coach be sure to go to a cat scale. Do not depend on weights shown from a lift that many repair facilities have. I compared results from both methods recently. The lift system underweighed my coach by over 4,000 lbs gross. The individual axle weights were off from 1500 to 2500 lbs each. This could get one in trouble quick depending on faulty information and making decisions based on that info.

    Dave,

On my Featherlite, the info is on the steer compartment door. There is a metal plate from Prevost, and another stick on plate from Featherlite.

I also have a Placard in the water bay from Featherlite that states recommended tire pressures as well.

How does Featherlight know what personal items you will carry or are their pressures based on axle weight ratings?

At one time even Prevost was recommending pressures that did not take into consideration actual axle loads.

Like others have done in the past, they use the tire manufacturers max pressure for the size and tire model as the recommended pressure knowing there are bozo’s who will over load the bus GVW or axle. CYA

Just a FYI, underinflation is just plain dangerous.

Over inflation is safer in that the tire has less chance of a failure but it will not be the most comfortable ride, it will not wear properly, but the worst result is stopping distances are compromised.
