Drive axle studs
Posted by Eric on July 29, 2025 at 8:51 pmI have a 1995 Prevost country coach. I just put on new tires and the tire dealer broke off one of the wheel studs on the passenger side duals. I see the inner stud will need to be replaced and it has a nut on the back side of the hub that holds it in place. What all will I need to take apart to replace this? Thanks.

Hey Eric….sorry to hear your dilemma, but if the shop broke the lug they should fix it don’t you think? Unless your not feeling their service quality, but that would be my first step. In any case though not seeing where the lug was broken makes it a little harder to answer your question. On the dual wheels you have the large nuts on the outer wheel and on the inner wheel there are square tip lugs….if the square lug is what’s broken it will depend on if you have enough lug to grab hold, so that could be a little difficult to do. But you will need a large lug extractor…they do sell kits. You can probably find one at a semi truck parts store…..not to sure about getting one from Amazon. Maybe Grainger or McMasters-Carr. I brought a semi wheel socket set with everything in it from Fleet Pride (except an extractor of course). Hope that helps.

Take it back to the person that broke the stud and make them replace it. It’s not an easy task. Drive axle needs to be lifted, tires removed etc. when they put the rims back on make sure they use a torque wrench and follow the pattern stated by Prevost.

Jerry, Mike, thanks for the information. I ended up only paying the shop’s price for the tires, nothing more ($900 under quoted price). There are occasions when it is simply best to leave and not have them touch anything else.

What was the shop name that behaved this way?

Eric, did you end up replacing the stud yourself, or take it back to the shop. If you did the job, what did it take to remove and install new stud. I have a damaged stud on my 2001 H3-45 drive axel (with disk brakes) and need to fix it asap as we are getting ready to hit the road.
Thanks

Late reply – after my tire install I later pulled drive wheels to do brakes and a wheel seal. Tire shop had tightened wheel studs so much I broke 2 on one side and 1 on the other taking off inner duals.
Those come off with a big nut on back of hub (one side I had off for seal and don’t remember if I had to remove other side for that reason or not). Got studs from Prevost, they are RH and LH specific as you are probably aware.

My issue is similar, was removing recent tire install to do brakes, and one inner lug was on so tight that it was binding on the rim snapped when removing it. Thought I was going to have to drill everything out and replace the stud, but with some carful heating up of the remaining lug at the wheel and with an extraction tool, I was able to get the lug off without damaging the stud. My studs press out/in.
