  • Drag link tie rod end?

Posted by Clint on February 23, 2025 at 9:21 pm

When maneuvering through a campground or parking lot whenever I turn the steering wheel I get a faint groan. Also, compared to my prior 2000 XL, the steering at any speed on my current bus isn’t as lite.

Bus has fairly new upper/lower CA and new tie-rods. The center-link is original. Power steering fluid level is correct.

This ball joint on the drag link tie rod looks pretty worn. I just got a new one from Prevost.

If this doesn’t fix it, what would be the next thing to look at?

Is your power steering pump filter clean?

Mine groans, always has, changed my fluid a filter 2 or 3 times over the years.

Others owner of buses of the same vintage as mine say theirs groan too.

Mine acted that way when i brought my bus home, i pulled out the filter and it was plugged solid. there should be pictures on here. 2 weeks ago, I replaced my PS pump, and Voila! quiet as can be. It wasn’t the noise that made me change it, it was the fact that it was leaking thru one of the case flanges. It would ratchet sometimes when i would make right or left turns, I can drive with my pinky now. I think the pump was damaged due to the plugged filter.

    Mike,

That’s really interesting. My 2000 Royale XL that I sold last year drove exactly like that. No noise and could drive with my finger tips. According to the vin that Royale was built 10 shells after my current CC. So it should be the same.

Also interesting is I have not checked the filter so that could be a problem, but I also have a slight leak at the PS pump. Not sure if it’s 90 degree fitting on the bottom that is the source or it’s leaking at the flange and dripping onto the fitting.

I think my filter is what did my pump in. Mine was 30 years old when i changed it.
