door seal for XL?
Posted by Kirby on March 20, 2017 at 4:34 pmHas anyone with a mid-90s XL gotten a new door seal? We’re having trouble getting Prevost to send us the right replacement seal. I have no idea why they always ask for the VIN if it’s apparently of no guidance to them. First they sent a seal 3″ too short, the second try is too thick and the door won’t close properly. At least I now can tell them two part numbers that are wrong.
So if anyone got a door seal that worked, a part number would be much appreciated. The wrong seal they sent is sort of a puffy thing, like the photo in the “door seals” post back in January. The seal we need would be flatter.

I am also interested in knowing. My seal is aged and needs to be replaced.

Linda, door seal design changed, from flatter design to “puffy” style for better seal…Prevost has it in bulk, cut to size for your specific coach VIN….why you got different sizes(?) not sure… -
Dorel, the difference in size relates to the length/height of the seal as we have an 86-inch coach rather than 83-inch. That’s per Leon at Marathon and he spoke of it in terms of interior height. Also apparently applies to the height of the door. We are learning stuff about this coach all the time.
Anyway, after the unhappy experience with the new puffy seal, and a discussion about it with a Prevost Parts Specialist (including us sending him photos of the old seal profile), he said he would investigate and let us know what he could find out. We got the following response via email:
There have been reports of the exact phenomenon that you are experiencing with your entrance door seal.
We
are using another sealing material. It is raw material, meaning that it
comes in 1 long piece that would have to be cut and glued at the
corners.
The part # is 280152 $6.34 per ft. the entrance door requires 21 ft.
They are issuing a credit for the cost of the seal that is too fat, and we should receive the seal material tomorrow. Linda -
I am really, really, really sorry we tried to improve the door seal. Just because there was some wind noise and it was old and had a folded over section. The project is not going well.
Ron and Tammie, stick with your old seal as long as you can if it is performing its purpose.

Thanks for the advice. We have some wind noise at highway speed. The door air lock pulls the door in pretty well, but some wind noise does remain. On your advice, maybe I just live with it for a while. We, too, are new to Prevost ownership and learning a lot as we go.
I would love to have a Jeff of ETLC somewhere closer to the Greenville, SC are so the drive across the mountains would not be rquired. I am flat land kind of guy. Further I can see the better I am.

We use Jeff alot…I just wish we were as close as you(mountains or not) as we cheerfully make the 1300 mile roundtrip. Geo.

Jon says I don’t have an “old coach”, what I have is a “classic.” Those of us with “classics” should expect some window noise and just live with it. First, I use the little green toggle switch on the right hand side of my switches panel to activate the air lock. I constantly forget to toggle it off when I’m getting out of the coach. Anyway, using the air lock will reduce the wind noise substantially. Having said that, the wind noise throught/around the toll window and the slider on the entrance door then produce a lower volume but just as irrating amount of wind noise. So if the noise bothers one that much the solution most likely involves the door gasket replacement as well as the toll window slider gaskets and the verticle strips of gasket on the sliding window.
One way to test the seal of the verticle gasket on the sliding toll window is to go through a truck car wash. If no water penetrates the gasket all is good. If on the other hand if water penetrates the gasket like water going over Niagara Falls, well the gasket is not doing its job and likely you will accelerate out of that truck wash like a jack rabbit.
Noises seem to just be a part of owning a “Classic.”

Expressbus, we have somewhat (in the sense that “hope springs eternal”) abandoned our search for the vertical gasket in the sliding windows as Prevost no longer has them and says the manufacturer of that particular item is out of business. We hope to be done with the door seal replacement sometime tomorrow and will take our “vintage” coach for a ride, and will report further.

To make a long story short, we ended up going to a local marine store and buying stock “D” shaped seal material, cutting it to fit. The last seal material Prevost sent also prevented the door from closing. We embarked on this change because the original one was bent over and damaged in places, which made wind noise a bit worse. With the new seal, there is still a little wind noise but it is an improvment.
