  • Does a plug go here?

    This is located on the exit side of the turbo. Im assuming a plug goes in this bung.

    Andre, does your pressure boost gauge work? Is it operating in the anticipated range, providing full boost?

    That appears based on the insulation to be on the exhaust side and not pressurized air to the engine, but what does not make sense is why if the hole is open why that area isn’t black with exhaust soot.

    The threads on the bung are black, but the area around it is realreally clean. I believe there should be a plug there but I’m not sure. And yes it is on the exhaust side. I didn’t notice any loss in power on our way back from Arizona.

    On my 97 Royale there is a looks like a 1/4 inch pipe plug, Look at yours might be a inset plug for a allen wrench put a small screw driver down it it.

    This is where an EGT (exhaust gas temp) probe would go. Should be plugged if not in use.

    Do you not have an EGT / Pyrometer gauge on your dash? Thats where my probe actually goes. If you need one, I have one you can have for free brand new. I just replaced my gauge but didnt need the probe that came with it.

    Very few coaches with the Series 60 motor home shells (if any) were provided with pyros.

    Jon: Should they have been? I’m on a facebook page for DD Series 60. From the pictures I see of dashes, most if not all have a dash mounted pyro.

    To be candid, most people do not know what a pyro tells them, or care so I suspect they were deleted on most if not all motor homes.

    I’ve not known of a Series 60 motor home conversion with one. How many on this forum have one, and who was the converter.

    I had them on my 8V92 powered 87 Liberty and monitored them a lot. Both banks ran identical temps and if one differed from the other that was my first sign something wasn’t right. I climbed hills like I stole the bus and never saw mine go over 1100. I knew the health of my Jakes by watching their temps when the Jakes were working. I don’t even see any provision for one on the new style dash boards.

    Sorry for the late response about the pyrometer., but my unit doesn’t have pyro. I’ve replaced the 1/4″ plug and everything is wonderful.

    Our coach is a 1994 series 60 1995 conversion by Royale . It has a pyro .

    Craig: What does it tell you? After running hard on the interstate and likely building high pyro (turbo) temps and you pull into a rest area, park and idle … can you watch the pyro temp come down so you know when it’s OK to shut engine off?

    A pyro is nothing more than a means of measuring the exhaust gas temp.

    I have never been able to find any information from Detroit about its expected range or limits such as limits that are specified for some planes. The only coach I had pyros on was my 8V92 coach and no matter how hard I was driving it I could never get it past 1100. I have read a lot of posts on forums about owners who think the pyro upper limit is 1000 degrees, but I could never find that in any Detroit information. Both the left and right bank pyros always agreed, not surprising since the engine always ran very well.

    But that coach had a Jake and I could use the pyros to monitor the Jake. When the high position was selected the Jake would raise the pyros to read around 300 degrees. If the low setting was selected only one engine bank (it was a V8) would show elevated pyro temps.

    By knowing what temps I would see on normal operations if the pyros deviated from normal I knew something was not right. That information allowed me to identify which bank my jake was not performing properly on and I was able to isolate the problem to a bad solenoid.

    In the same manner if the pyros were not showing the same temps under normal operation I would be able to know which engine bank may have an issue with and injector or some other problem.

    Similar to what I had with my 94 Liberty 8V92, but I could get the pyro’s above 1100 and I was very careful not to do that. The engine had a rebuild not to long before I bought the bus from Brian and he was very careful about EGT and we both followed the rebuild shops warnings about EGT and high temps. The Pyro’s were very accurate and useful in confirming jake performance as Jon pointed out.

    Nothing sounds like a 2 stroke and it was sooooo smooth, still going strong today.
