Do you have a Knox Box on your Bus Barn?
A Knox Box is a secure device into which keys to a building are put that can be accessed ONLY by fire departments, police, or EMS depending on the agreements in your area. Once you see the pictures of a Knox Box and notice the distinctive red reflective sticker, you’ll start to see Knox Boxes on commercial buildings all over.
Check out the pictures and the Knox Box website. You need to get permission typically from your local fire department to order a Knox Box which is when to discuss location of the box with the FD. Once you have the box securely installed the fire department will come back to open the box so you can put the key in. Personally I like bricking it in.
I discovered Knox Boxes when a tenant in our apartment building had his LifeAlert device “go off” while he was out of town. The local ambulance service and PD were called to the apartment by the LifeAlert system and got no answer at the door. So given the reason they were there, they went through a thermopane Andersen patio door to gain access and determined no one was home. Tenant replaced the patio door the following week. I mentioned the event to the owner of the ambulance service (who was also area fire chief, owned the HVAC company we used for the buildings, etc.) and he told me to call the full time assistant chief to get a Knox Box. The AFC showed me a massive ring of building keys that they carry in the fire truck. That brought memories of the ring of keys that were in the family funeral home’s ambulance that potential ambulance patients had given my Dad and Uncle “just in case”.
The Knox Box is much more convenient for the FD, PD, EMS to gain access than trying to work with a massive ring of keys or having no keys and being forced to gain entry with a Pulaski or fireman’s axe.
