  • Disc brakes on Prevosts

Posted by Per on July 11, 2015 at 1:20 am

What year did Prevost start putting disc brakes on all axles? My 2000 XLII brochure shows all discs, Did the earlier models also have it? How about the H3? Would appreciate info–we’re narrowing down our prospects. Once we sell our coach, we’ll be looking seriously–probably a 2000-2002 XLII. So far, I have found the H3 cockpit a bit too cramped with insufficient space to recline the seat, even though I like the styling of the H3 better than the XL series.

It was around when you said as far as the year. However if you are basing the entire selection of a coach on disc brakes you are likely passing up some really good coaches.

There is nothing I can think of on a chassis or a conversion as far as features such as all disc brakes or IFS that would be a show stopper if it was not on the coach. I have never seen a comparison that showed the different stopping distances of comparable weight coaches with all drum, drum/disc, or all disc brakes. I know what we are supposed to believe, but I have not seen the data.

I would say with respect to braking, if you want the best braking possible then rule out a coach with only Jakes, and instead focus on a coach with a retarder, or a retarder with jakes. The supplements to our brakes play a huge role in stopping.

Remember when shopping, older H3-45’s received “goodies” before the XLII’s. Such as disc brakes, dual pane windows, air activated button to tilt/telescope steering wheel, and because of different rear/drive axle inner duals are alloy and 9 inches wide, instead of 8 3/4 inch wide steel wheels.

Believe me, there are a lot of things we are looking at beside disc brakes. Nevertheless I consider disc brakes a requirement–much less chance of fading. First and foremost we are looking at floorplans–there are some strange ones out there. We want a stacked washer and dryer, and I think I would like roof ACs vs CruiseAirs, although the verdict is still out on that one. OTR AC seems like an unnecessary item–our roof ACs can freeze us out of coach. I have no problem with Jake brakes–they are very effective on our coach, however, I would probably have the Jake reprogrammed to a target gear of second–many coaches are programmed to 4th, with manual downshifting from there. With the Jake on high in third it’s like throwing a boat anchor out.

No choice of engines, but the series 60 should be a good engine. Seems like the Allison 4060 will be the transmission in the year coaches we’re looking at, which is the same tranny we have. Will have it changed over to Transynd if not already done. Most critical will be the condition of the coach, and we will look to a Prevost center to help us out on that issue. Would prefer a flat screen TV, but if necessary can change the tube TV out. Don’t want slides, but could stand one. Kind of leaning towards a Marathon after our factory visit last month, plus Marathon of Texas is only 246 miles from house. Will check out the Dallas coaches after we get home, but have no idea from their web site where the coaches are–we test drove a coach in Coburg that according to the web site is in Texas! Will have fun looking, though. The fun is in the chase, right!
