  • Dirty Wheel…

Posted by Dale on July 24, 2015 at 11:35 am

I have had the bus sitting for sometime and noticed the right tag had oil on the floor. I thought that it might need a hub seal kit installed or a new nut cover or just a filler plug. I had checked and filled the oil levels on the hubs last week before heading to MN for a 1200 mile round trip. The wheel was oily on the inside and spinning out the holes on the wheel. I cleaned the wheel while in MN and when I got back home, I removed the wheel and cleaned all the oil on the inside of the wheel. It now has been sitting for three days and not a drip.

For some reason I can’t seem to figure out how oil can settle in the inside of a wheel. The brake pads are dry. Wouldn’t oil from a bad seal have to leak out the drum? A bad nut cover couldn’t get to the wheels inside, or a filler plug.

    Any ideas?

Dale, If oil is accumulating on the inside of the wheel on the tag it is likely to be coming from the hub seal.

If the Stemco cover, gasket or the rubber plug is the source the oil would likely show up in the face of the wheel. It could get into the rear of the wheel if it leaked when parked and the holes in the wheel aligned perfectly with the oil coming from the face, but unlikely. I assume you did not fill the hub to an oil level much higher than the bottom of the clear plastic face. The correct level is about 1/8″ up on the clear plastic.

Hub seals don’t repair themselves. but if it is dry now, make sure it is filled and monitor it after driving for a while.

Jon, it’s just a little annoying. I remember replacing the hub seal maybe 8 years ago and haven’t had any issues until I let the bus just sit. I’m watching it since we don’t have any trips planned.

After the 1200 miles last week, it wasn’t leaking and the hub oil was still to the level line. Maybe it fixed itself. 🙂
