Anybody have any advice on getting around Mobile to skirt that awful tunnel. Coming from the north usually on 45. Thx. Mike

The tunnel is much quicker. If you absolutely don’t want to do the tunnel you can bypass the tunnel.
Heading west exit ALT 90 (exit 27) which is the last exit before the tunnel. Head north on ALT 90 to Interstate 165. It is generally quicker to go north on Interstate 165 to Interstate 65 and head south and rejoin Interstate 10 about 6.5 miles west of the tunnel. You can also go south on Interstate 165 but you will have to take North Water Street through downtown to rejoin Interstate 10.
Heading east take Interstate 65 north to Interstate 165 and head south to the New Bay Bridge Road (ALT 90) and then rejoin Interstate 10 just east of the tunnel. Alternatively exit Water Street (exit 26B) and follow north to Interstate 165 to ALT 90 (New Bay Bridge Road).
The I-65 option adds about 10 miles to the trip. The Water Street option adds about 8 miles to the trip. Time wise, they are both about the same depending on traffic.

The tunnel is the way to go.
Done it 10 or so times with two coaches.

Yep, X4 on using the tunnel. It’s funny that you don’t like it as I have been through that tunnels more than a dozen times and have never once had an issue that would make be even consider a different route.

Thx to all. The only issue I have with the tunnel is that I am not a very good planner and seem to get there during rush hour and find things very clogged up. Also coming down 45 puts us coming into Mobile from the north so would be convenient to go off to the east to catch I 10 so might follow Loc’s advice. Thx again. Mike

It you are coming in from the north on US 45 it is probably quicker to jump over to I-165 and then take the bridge on ALT 90 than trying to get into town to take the tunnel. I didn’t think about coming in from the north. I always go left or right through Mobile so I didn’t think about it.
