Good question Larry, I’ve been having the same thought as my Direct bill continues to climb out of site for the house and bus.

We switched from Dish to DTV because Dish wouldn’t allow us to have as many extra receivers as we needed… Turned out that I like DTV much better than Dish.

We have 10 receivers in our house 3 in the Prevost 2 in our Navigator 2 in our Sportfishing boat and 5 on big boat and Dish wanted only a max of 3-5 on an account would have cost us over $500 a month versus $200 (for all of them +VIP service) at DTV and we take all their channels except for the adult ones.

I know this doesn’t answer your question but I just wondered why you would change… other than for the HD while moving which would require a new Satellite dish on top?

The change has nothing to do with the bus. First we don’t watch a lot of TV. Where we live we get one over the air channel. Direct will not supply us with local channels to the county where we live. We live out of town 2 miles from the county line. If we lived 2 miles south we would have access to Direct’s local channels. Direct TV offers local channels to our area. We have never had HD so it is not a big deal for us.

OK… we live in East TX and had the same problem as far as local channels go they only offer one but we wanted them all ( out of Houston) so I changed our primary address to Galveston where we keep our boats and now we get all of the Locals CBC NBC ABC and a dozen others which is great for us. You can probably get the boxes in the bus and get a PO BOX or something then after that add the boxes to your house (by mail only & self install) and they will be programmed the same as the bus.

Later on I changed our billing address the our office in Lufkin and have never had the first problem. Maybe you can figure something like that if you have an office address in your city.

The
bus was set up for Direct TV when I got it. Have had Dish at home for many
years and like it. Contacted Moto Sat regarding changing to dish and found out
that it’s a simple do it yourself setup option.

Dish offers a deal that includes a small auto locate portable antenna for those
areas where the one on the bus is blocked by trees. The antenna is powered from
the coax and all controls are mounted in the “Tailgater box” that is
a little bigger than a basketball and fully enclosed with a carry handle. I can
now place the portable antenna 100 feet from the bus and get HD programming for
an extra $6 a month added to my home bill, Thats $90 a month less than I was paying Direct TV.

New receiver and the antenna onetime cost $499 from Dish.

Not sure what I would do with 10 receivers, maybe one in the kayak, and one in
the john or would that be Jon, not sure.

John (not Jon) does that Dish “Aux” antenna have auto programming? We have a small WInegaurd unit that sounds similar to what you have,but I have never had any luck in “tuning” it in, it being Manual and necessary to obtain the necy degree settings and then fine tune off the TV itself.

The tailgator antena is automatic and even provides HD vidio.

FWIW, i switched from DTV to Dish because I wanted HD and take advantage of their “pay as you go” monthly service plan. I converted (reprogrammed) the existing RL5 in-motion antenna and it works great. Single receiver. Cost is about $35 per month. Converting the dish cost me $300 – we watch very little TV. I get my news off of the Internet. When we watch TV, we typically buy a movie. That may happen once or sometimes twice a week. In fact, having a “smart” TV, I can stream movies from the Internet. So DTV and Direct would not be required at all.
