Differential oil capacity’s
Posted by Chuck & Katrina on March 12, 2023 at 3:47 pmOK I give up:
Searched the form and found a lot of info ref differentials. Looked through my service manuals and found plenty of info too, BUT nothing on the oil capacity of the diff for an oil change. Diff service manual notes about a dozen different models ranging from 2.5 Gal to over 6 gal cap. Can’t find any documentation on what specific differential I have in my coach, let alone a oil capacity amount.
Any input is appreciated.

My 95 Chassis/96 Liberty XL takes 4.5 gallons. I’ve changed it twice over the years.
Here’s a PC thread I did last Nov when I changed it last:

*CORRECTED*
My Prevost mx manual, Sec.11, p. 11-11, states “diff holds 41 pints”.
When I change mine it takes 4.5 gals (36 pints) because I don’t drain the hubs.
Your results may vary?

Chuck, you can’t overfill it if you pop out the top fitting. Fill it up to level with the bottom of the hole, take it for a drive then check the level and top off as needed. Mine took a couple attempts to get it right. I actually filled the last 2 attempts right into the hubs. My axles have a pipe threaded fitting for this purpose.

Drained and refilled today. 19 quarts, haven’t taken it for a drive yet. Would guess it going to take a little more once driven.

Rear diff can be over or under filled if the axle housing is not level when filling.

Good Point Don, I would hope folks know that the bus needs to be sitting on level ground. That pretty much goes for all the fluids.
-
Good input Don. I had coach up on ramps, front and back so it was level.

Err, there are 8 pints to a gallon. 18 pints would be 2 gallons and a quart.
4.5 gallons would be 36 pints?
Do you mean quarts instead of pints? 18 quarts would be 4.5 gallons?
My Prevost mx manual, Sec.11, p. 11-11, states “diff holds 21 pints”.
When I change mine it takes 4.5 gals (18 pints) because I don’t drain the hubs.

OOOOOPS, Good catch Mikee:
Somehow (age?) I got confused when putting my post together. I’ll correct my original.
The mx manual states “41 pints”. My diff holds 4.5 gals = 36 pints (not 18) without draining the hubs.My drive axle hubs don’t have a drain/fill plug in them. I wish they did.Clint & Tammy Summers

Mine was 19 of these. Probably 18.5 I spilled some while filling.
