Differential Fluid change and quantity.
Posted by Glenn on April 3, 2015 at 3:52 pmHey all did a quick search but did not anything….can dig in the manual but thought I would ask what you guys have experienced on a diff fluid change.
Just hit 100K and doing a bunch of maintenance next week including switching the diff fluid to synthetic, think it was last changed around 50k according to old Prevost records.
Anyone know approximatly how many quarts the diff took when doing a drain and fill?

I changed my last coach and instead of the 4 gallons specificed it took the entire 5 gallon pail

Glen put 85/140 in it and change every two years or three and it will be good not worth the synthetic price just my thoughts you know anyways I pull a trailer all the time

I agree with Peter that the decision for differential grease type has to be based on if you are pulling a heavy trailer. Joel might respond because he does use synthetic.

If you haven’t changed your differential’s vent, ever, change it out. It’s about a $150 part from Prevost. We found on our H, rapid extreme altitude changes with a plugged or marginal operational vent with weak spring, the internal excessive pressure has to go somewhere. The weakest point is the “paper” drive axle flange seal. If a drive axle outer flange seal is blowing diff fluid, bet your vent is plugged

I would absolutely use only synthetic.
If you are subjecting your coach to extreme use (high speeds, heat, towing) it’s a much better choice which can easily be verified by the observation of lower diff oil operating temps. If you’re not subject to severe service, you can increase your service interval to the point where you may never change again.

Remember if your replacing the differential oil because of a seal leak and or a wheel bearing change.
remember to tilt the coach in the direction of the change. The only way your outer bearings get lubed is from the differential fluid. A dry rear wheel bearing is good for only ten miles running dry before burning into the axel. Been there had iit happen. very bad results. -
Got 19 qts of full synthetic 75-140 in it and did a lot of other stuff on an all day thrash yesterday….the diff fluid was due to be changed so glad I got it done along with a whole lot of other PM stuff, think my brother and I did not finish until close to midnight!
I hear that the truckers who are running synthetic in the trans and rear ends are doing 500k intervals…with towing and the heat I only considered running a quality 100% synthetic!
