Any idea how much a top end overhaul should cost at 140K miles?

Do you mean top end “overhaul” or just setting the “overhead”, that is, adjusting valves and injector height? On a truck with easy access, adjusting valves and injectors is usually around $800. On a bus it would be more due to lack of access.

Over the years I’ve seen enough posts from Prevost owners going to American Fleet for that service that American Fleet should be able to give you a good estimate of costs and time, both for doing the work with engine in place (if there is enough room) and pulling it.

I was told by American Fleet a couple of years ago to watch the fuel mileage over a long period. I had about 90,000 miles at that time. They said when it starts to drop off, then it’s time. I have 123,000 now. Over that time my mileage slowly increased. It might have leveled off. I’ll know in next three weeks as we wander Florida and then head towards Texas.

As I recall, unless American Fleet finds an unexpected problem, they can pull the engine/trans, do the work, and reinstall the engine/trans in two days. When mine is done, I’m planning on sitting and waiting for it. That’s two days unless you want the the engine and accessories cleaned and painted and/or a chrome exhaust manifold installed. I suspect that while the drivetrain is out, AF can detail the entire engine compartment if you wish.

I did get a quote from American Fleet two or three years ago. I’m in Florida and that email is in Wisconsin. My best recollection is that it was under $2,000 … but that’s a recollection from a couple of years ago.

There should be a few forum members who have had the work done recently who can tell us what was on their invoices.

Two months ago I ran into a recently retired DD/Allison tech from Inland Power in Butler (WI)/west side of Milwaukee off Silver Spring. I asked him about the overhead valve and injector service and he was quite familiar with it. I asked him about accessing a S-60 in a Prevost and he said the drivetrain slides in and out real easy if that’s the best way to get at it … radiator on the side.

Bill Doherty from Liberty Coach said they take all their Detroit Diesel/Allison work to Inland in Butler. He highly recommends them.

I had my 02 Marathon H done at DD in Ocala and it was less then 6000. The H has plenty of room above the engine, but the XL and XLII’s are going to be more expensive due to not being able to get the valve cover off without accessing from inside.

We had our Series 60 pulled and top end done. The jake was not working but American Fleet fixed that while doing the top end. I would definitely take ours back to them. It was a drive from Florida but they did the job in just over a day and did a good job. They did forget to run the motor long enough to burp the air out of the radiator and lines. I got a low coolant light the next morning upon start up.

Went to Inlands Website and they are a complete service center for Allison and Detroit Diesel. When I get the Coach, I now have a great recommendation for a service center. Thanks Dick.

Have you tried Stewart Stevenson in Dallas. Took my coach in 2 years ago down in San Antonio, same company, and they were working on another (60 series) while I was there. This is what my 8V92TA looked like when they were replacing Blower Seals in the shop. .
