Detroit question
Posted by Jeff on August 31, 2020 at 9:59 pmJust bought an 05 Liberty and noticed when in the higher gears and throttling or downshifting it puts out a good bit of black diesel smoke. My 02 did not do this so I was curious if this is ok. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

What Jeff said.
An EGR coach (I assume this is an EGR coach, and if so it will be identified as DDEC V on the label on the rear electric box) might have leaks as Jeff mentions.
Usually your boost gauge is an indicator. At full throttle you can peg the boost at the 30 PSI limit. But with an EGR coach the gauges lie. When the EGR engages the actual boost pressure can go as high as 50 PSI but the gauge does not show that.
With the coach at high idle spray soapy water at the CAC (next to the radiator) and if bubbles appear where the tubes connect top and bottom to the tanks the CAC is defective. But due to the high temps and pressures look especially hard at the flexible hoses between the turbo and the CAC. Use your hands or a mirror and look all the way around them.

My bad. You do not have an EGR coach so two things change. Your boost gauge shows actual boost and if it hasn’t been going full range when under heavy power you do have a leak. The CAC is not likely to be an issue, but the flexible hoses could be.

I have been seeing a lot of issues with algea in the fuel and therefore plugging fuel filters….Loss of boost is what you see, however due to lack of fuel no smoke….Just thought I would throw that out there for others….Fuel sucks nowadays….May consider a good additive to combat this…

Jeff..where are you seeing this bad fuel? Any specific area? I have not seen any for some time now, basically since they went to the ultra low sulfur fuel.
It sure sucks if you do get some though….

Jeff is of course correct – run some Howes with every fill up – however – have you checked your air filter lately?

My boost gauge appears to be showing correctly, I will check the air filter and add some fuel additive. I do have an appointment with Jeff later this month, and I am confident he will get me fixed up. Thanks everyone for all the replies.
