Detroit Deisel Service Centers
Apparantly not all Detroit Deisel Service Centers, service Detroit Deisel engines.
I was refused service at an authorized Detroit Deisel Service Center in Albuquerque this morning. The service center is listed on the Detroit Deisel website as an authorized Detroit Deisel Service Center. The dealer’s name is Freghtliner of Albuquerque. It is located on I-40, just west of town. I was told that since I was not on a Freightliner chassis, they did not have to provide me service.
I reminded them that I had a Series 60 engine, they were listed on the Detroit Deisel website as an authorized service center AND had a Detroit Deisel sign on their building, they again refused to help me. For the second time, they said they did not have to help me.
I tried calling Detroit Deisel’s phone number as listed on their website, only to have no one answer and the phone hang up without being able to leave a message. It was 8:35 am CDST.
I called Stewart & Stevenson in Albuquerque, who said “… yea, just drop it by and we will get to it when we can in a few days …”. I reminded them I was passing through town and was living in the coach and could not just drop it by. They said, well that’s how we do it.
I’ve had similar poor experiences in Albuquerque at other service centers. I guess the lesson here, is avoid Albuquerque if you need service.

Recomended service in Memphis, TN will not work on 8V92, but will work on series 60. If you need service on 8V92, contact G&W.

A 2 stroke engine is rapidly losing support from conventional Detroit Diesel dealers. The experienced 2 stroke mechanics are retiring, the mechanics replacing them lack experience and some hav e never seen, much less worked on one.
But that does not mean they cannot be serviced. Not only are there mechanics that can service them, parts are available. Don’t forget to consider American Fleet if you feel you need a rebuild or replacement or even service work if you are in their area.
There are a lot of home builders who are driving buses with 2 stroke engines and if you need service in a given area don’t hesitate to participate in the Bus Conversion Magazine forum or the Bus Nuts Online forum. Some of our members are on those sites. Another great site is Bus Grease Monkey, also populated by some of our members.

after a few calls I found a shop in a corner of Santa Fe……

I called with a drivers A/C problem, the techs found it, had part overnighted to shop,
where we spent the night with 50amp service, and was on our way by noon the next day.
They are a busy little shop with a crew of knowledgeable mechanics and managers.
The shop isnt much to look at but they did the job right.

Michael, that sucks, but sounds like DD could care less about servicing the series 60.
Did you happen to call PASS to see if they had alternatives?

Rush Truck Centers will work on the 60 series but not the DD13 so will the Kentworth dealer west of town on I 40.It is sad what M/B has done to Detroit it pissed a bunch of truck dealers off big time

One look at the Smart car and it will not take much to realize M-B hasn’t been making good decisions lately.

OOOOH, Jon, that hurts! My wife LOVES her 2009 Smart. I’m not too wild about it, but I’ve spent about $400 on repairs in 7 years…can’t talk her into trading!

I am looking at it from a safety point of view, especially when I see one along side of the bus. And for the miniature size the fuel mileage is terrible. If I am careful I can almost reach the Smart car mileage with my Corvette.

With apologies to Rick DeSilva it appears the Subaru is the geezer car of choice around here. In New England it is mandatory everyone has to own at least one Subaru, especially if the person is a tree hugger.
But I bet I don’t see more than one Smart car a month.
Tom, you are a geezer, so does Nancy get a Smart car instead of slides?

I would be way ahead if I just bought her a Smart and not discuss slides. Or maybe a Fiat, fast Ricky loves those.

I agree. I don’t understand the Smart car. It should get at least 50 mpg+ with the gas engine. And, it uses premuim fuel? What the heck?
The crash tests show that it can hold it’s own.
