Destin, FL route from Nashville
We are headed down to Destin to Camp Gulf for Spring Break. It’s a pretty easy shot down 65 but S of Montgomery, we are looking for a good route. I’ve been down 231 towards Panama City, but has anyone done Hwy 31/9 down to Destin. From Google Maps it looks like one of those routes that will have my wonderful wife and co-pilot screaming “tree, no shoulder, tree” for most of the trip. Has anyone done that route?
Also, any good campgound/RV park suggestions between Birmingham and Montgomery? We’ll probably go 4 hours or so and spend the night.
Any advice is appreciated.

There’s a campground in Greenville called Sherling Lake Park exit 130 that we stayed at and it was good. We stayed on site #40.

We spend the night at the Wal Mart in Alabaster, just south of Birmingham on I 65. Been there many times. Mexican resturant within walking distance and sells a pitcher of Margaritas for 12 bucks. Food is not too bad either.

One suggestion is to experiment. After 24 years of Prevost ownership I can say we have learned to pick routes that seem best for our trip, but if they didn’t work out to try something else.
This is a big country and there is a lot to see so with rare exception there are no choices that end up in disaster. Some choices are better than others, but even then outside factors may influence which road to take such as weather, road construction, or seasonal traffic.
The only caution is to be very careful when a route chosen is not acceptable to truckers. This might be especially true in areas that have narrow roads, low clearances or bridge weight limits. New England is an area that requires some checking before leaving the main roads.
