Decorative wall plumbing bay
One of my Atwood water heaters is leaking due to corrosion and I need to replace both of them. Marathon has installed a wall with a small door in it in on the plumbing bay (see picture), as far as I can tell just to make it look nice. Getting water heaters our would be fairly easy except the wall is in the way. As far as I can tell, the wall is attached to the block of wood the 110v water pump is mounted on. This means the water pump has to come out to remove the wall, and this involves screwing with quite a bit more PVC, brass fittings, hoses, etc, all of which have the potential to crack or break while undoing them and leak afterwards. I was wondering if any Marathon owners out there had a trick for removing the decorative wall? I’ve considered just sawing the thing out, which would be unsightly. I wish they hadn’t put the thing there in the first place.

My decorative wall is different than yours … although I replaced my water heaters last year. Mine just screw off.

Although mine is a bit different, the cover walls (I have two) comes off with the removal of a few screws, and I have full access to the water heaters.

Mike, ours is similar to yours. We have two small angle brackets holding ours in place. Open the plastic door, directly above inside should be one bracket, then on the outside right of the wall, about half way up behind it is the other, use your hand or a mirror to see it. Bottom is just held in place in a channel. You should not have to do anything with the pump. Hope this helps.

Just had my Atwoods replaced after 18 years with Kuuma 120V Front Mounted Heat Exchanger at CoachPro. Two guys all day to pull wall apart and disassemble plumbing and re-plumb bay to new front mounted heat exchanger. The fittings for heat exchangers are aluminum vs plastic and metal tank is double wall. Looklng forwarded to 20 more years of service.

Donald – thanks much. That did the trick. There was only 1 bracket on mine, on the far (invisible) side of the side wall. A real S*B to get to – lots of blind futzing with a long Phillips screwdriver finally got it detached. Question – did you replace yours with newer Atwoods or with Kuumas?
