  • DC BATTERY CHARGING PREVOST XL 1996-1997

Posted by andrew on January 22, 2020 at 7:40 am

I recently bought a property with a Prevost XL sitting on the land. There is a water hook up, septic hook up and AC electrical hook up. I am looking to get it liveable for guests. On the AC power side of things everything electrical seems to be working (fridge, microwave, hot plate, etc.) however on the DC power side of things I have been having issues. I recently took 2 good batteries from the chasis and installed them on the inverters for the house. Everything worked (lights, air etc.) but after 2 days the batteries died.

It is worth mentioning the bus has not been turned on in years, the engine has many loose belts and is a project I dont want to get into. I am looking for a solution to keep my batteries charged only using shore power. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Who converted the coach? What is the converter’s model? Or was it a home build? For example, a Liberty Classic would have a 12VDC system and a Liberty Elegant Lady has 24VDC.

Are you saying that there were only 2 house batteries originally?

The inverters are really inverter/chargers and they charge the batteries. Depending on the converter, you may have different styles of meters to tell you how much power is going into the batteries.

There is also an equalizer on some coaches to balance the batteries (when using 12V batteries to make 24V), so if you only hooked up two and the system was designed for more than two, that could be your problem

The answer is likely an easy one, but the question and associated information is lacking.

What kind of conversion? What model of conversion if the converter offered two models. For example, Liberty, Marathon, Country Coach, etc.

What batteries need charging? House, chassis?

Loose belts can be as simple as airing up the coach so the pneumatic belt tensioners are inflated.

The more information you provide the better the answers.

Do not rule out the fact old batteries that have been dead or deeply discharged are not going to ever get charged and if you have one or can get one it is strongly suggested you get or have access to a multi-tester because questions relating to batteries, charging, electrical circuits etc. almost always will need information about voltages under different circumstances.
