The starting point is to quantify what you are dealing with.
My initial reaction is the valve that allows the flow of hot coolant to moderate the temperature is not closing properly so you did the next best thing and totally closed off coolant flow. That solves the problem temporarily but on cold morings followed by how days you will need both heat and cold so it becomes impractical opening the valves when you need heat, but closing them when you need AC.
Regarding your sense of inadequate AC up front, what is the return air versus supply air temp. The spread is what is important because that is a good measure of the system health. Tell us those numbers and the specific locations of the thermometer and other members can provide their temps and determine if you have a problem and where you might need to begin looking for the problem.
The forward air in the driver’s area is part of the OTR system with a solenoid valve controling refrigerant flow to the front evaporator.
