Many cheers to American Fleet Inc. On Friday night of Memorial Day weekend at 7:30 pm we start to do a valve adjustment and set Jake brake on my 60 series Detroit. When we remove the valve cover we find metal in the engine the rocker arms and cam are eating each other up. We are to leave on vacation the following Wednesday not looking good. I found the rocker arms at two of my local freightliner dealerships but cam is on national backorder called Detroit and no luck with them no cams until June 6th. My friend called American Fleet and got A after hours number so I called And got in touch with Craig he found a cam at his local freightliner dealer but it was to late to get it shipped overnight. Remember it is Memorial Day weekend and American Fleet is closed for the holiday. Craig said he would go to the shop on Saturday morning and pick up the cam on his holiday weekend. I leave Arlington Texas at 11:00 pm drive to Springfield Missouri to meet Craig at 9:00 am on Saturday to receive the cam that will salvage our vacation get it home Saturday afternoon and my mechanic gets it in and running on Sunday. We just returned home from a wonderful vacation and owe a great deal of thanks to Craig for all he did on his time off. What great customer service from someone who could of said call me on Tuesday. Craig I can’t thank you enough and I will always talk about the service that I received from your company.

Just curious, how many miles on the
engine when you did the valve and Jake inspection/adjustment?

103,000 some one had been in it prior and changed some rocker arms think they had something out of adjustment.

Sorry to do this in multiple posts but
    I am very interested.

    Was there any noticeable performance
indication or unusual engine noise that caused you to look under the
    valve cover?

A worn cam and associated parts is a serious issue and I wonder if it started with a lubrication problem?

Is anything being done to get the metal out of the engine prior to the return for service?

No performance issues running great but jake not working properly so we were changing out the three solenoids for fhe jake, and doining the valve adjustment sence we were there and it had 100,000 mikes on it. not much metal in the motor so we flushed it with new oil,ran it 30 mikes and changed it again and all is well.

thoes mikes are supposed to be miles sorry for any confusion. Ran it 2800 miles on vacation and now at Prevost Ft. Worth for a check up just to look and be sure there are no more issues.

That’s quite a story Mike and I’m happy it ended as it did! Every once and awhile we find someone willing to take the extra steps to make this outcome possible. Great news!

I’m with Jon on the “Is anything being done to get the metal out of the engine prior to the return for service”?

Metal was not bad, we caught it early so not much damage but enough to want to replace all parts even the ones with no damage. So a flush with fresh oil before start up with new filters and another full oil change after 30 miles.

The oil pan drain plug is magnetized so if it shows clean of metal shavings at oil changes you can be sure the quick changes in succession and the oil filters are doing a good job.

oil analysis probably would have caught this and other issues early

The drain plug would also have identified it quickly.

I think I just got lucky and opened it up just in time.
