cruise air service
Could not decide to ask question on an old post or start new.
Couple questions, one of my units stopped cooling after recent recharge( just added some r22) the compressor starts but only runs a few seconds.
My “service guy” was not familiar with cruise air, talked to Dana at AAP. but he was not comfortable continuing, after few voltage checks ,etc.
There are post of looking for replacement compressors. You who have replaced compressors, was it worth it? or if you had a do over would you replace the unit?
any clue as to bad sensor or ” for compressor not running?
Dana , mentioned relays and start/run Caps, and a “sensor”?

I replaced mine but i did have to wait till a run of compressors were done. and bought it and related parts from dana. has been run hard for two summers in az. it pulls more amps than my other two. we think because it is a retro to use r22. i put a electric fan on the unit for traffic lites and hotter days. but was my only option as nothing was to be had. the rebuilt units only replace what they find na. i wish i had roof airs but i really like the ca when they are working. this summer we stayed between 5000 ft and 8000 ft elevation. and that worked. im good down the road all three on genset and dash ac. they cycle. just the info i have for what its worth. good luck. ps. i did find a real good tech to work on mine. locally.

I just had a Cruisair acting the same way. The compressor started and ran for about 10 seconds and then kicked out. The amp draw was in range at about 12.5. I had my Hvac guy check the charge and he determined the charge was good. His recommendation was that the compressor was bad and should be changed. I started looking for a compressor and found they they are not available until October. During my internet search the overload relay for the compressor kept popping up. I decided to check it and found that it was bad. I changed it and all is good now. The overload relay is located on the bottom of the compressor under a little housing. I called my Hvac guy to tell him that i found the problem and well to gloat a little. He said hmm those never go bad. If your amp draw is within range it is likely that your compressor is fine. Jeff

Jeff, thanks. Is it just a matter of checking continuity or voltage to determine if the overload is bad? or did you just replace it? do you recall part number?

I went back to my notes and learned that the connector (female spade terminal) on the wire that hooked to the overload was discolored. I changed the terminal and the overload without further testing. In fairness to my Hvac guy and to give you the whole picture the bad terminal could have been causing the heat that was tripping the overload. The overload is a temperature activated NC switch that opens at 120 degrees (verify that number). I suppose you could test it by using a heat gun along with an IR gun while checking continuity.

Jim, why not take it to Marathon, since you are right next dooe? They have a great AC guy. They found a leak in the evaporator radiator on our galley AC. It it running almost continuously this summer, and still cools great.

In researching further it seems that the overload is activated by heat but not necessarily from direct heat from the compressor. It has an element that heats up when power passes through it and opens the relay when the compressor draws more amps than the overload is rated for. Some sources say it can also open from direct heat from the motor or a hot connection. I didnt want to misinform anyone and im very surprised that i have not been corrected.

Terry, what size and what voltage fan did you add I full time and when the temps are 100, I get high pressure delay.

I used a street rod type fan that fits the front area of my ac and self tap screwed it to the swing frame and also used an after market adjustable tstat with a remote temp bulb clamped it to the freon line so it cycles with the temps and put a rocker switch at the dash. i think it was a 14 or 16 inch fan. not the cure all but sure has made my life better. summit racing or jegs. best source i have found. i bought couple spares. not needed but i carry one. good luck.
