I’m
going to disagree with replacing the compressor prior to checking the overload.

The overload is a Klixon thermo disk that is connected to the compressor common
terminal with a spade clip. The start and run terminals are also connected with
spade terminals. The fact that the wire to the overload is burnt suggests that
the common spade clip to the overload was loose. This type of failure is common
and there is a kit available from most parts houses that will replace the spade
clip with a screw on clip if the compressor terminal has been damaged. You
should be able to get a new overload and a spade terminal screw on kit for
around 30 bucks.

Thanks John, I have ordered the overload from AAP and will check those connections also. Since this is the easy and least expensive way it is worth a try.

Taking your advice,John, I replaced the thermal overload, cleaned all connections and it seems to have solved the problem. I have run it for about 4 days and nights in my barn so maybe I got lucky.
