  • Cruisair/SMX

Calling all SMX experts. Although I put roof airs on my coach, I still try to keep the elderly cruisairs going. On a recent trip, suddenly lost all the LEDs on the salon SMX. Interestingly, it still functions ok but no indicator lights. Have to guess where it is set. Swapped out for another working SMX and same thing with the “bad” one functioning well in that donor location.

As near as I can figure, there should be 5v DC at the plug in pins of the SMX. I have 5 at two of them and about 1.5v at the other. The 4th is the ground. Sooooo, my feeble electronic mind takes me to the condenser unit, I think. Haven’t crawled in behind the front bumper yet to investigate and that will be a chore because the unit we are talking about is the one stuffed far back behind the swing out unit. Will have to tear it apart to even get the top off to explore.

Before undertaking that exercise am wondering if anyone has been there, done that. Are there SMX fuses inside that condenser unit? Is the power module for the SMX, in fact, inside the condenser unit or do I need to chase something different? Have already tried the off and on thing for all pertinent breakers, etc.

    Thx in advance. Mike

No….nothing inside the condenser units other than relays and terminals.

There is a clearly identified CA control / communication “box” for each CA mounted somewhere in your bays.

May be behind a partition or mounted out of sight on a ceiling but they are there – one for each unit.

Good information. Thx. Let the search begin!! Actually, I am relieved that I don’t have to tear into that well hidden condenser unit.

Power comes from the cruisair brain to the thermostat in this picture its the furthest to the right on a 6 pin ethernet type plug. Try swapping the thermostat connection with another brain if it works then your brain is bad.

Thx, Jack. Did that. Brain bad. New brain not cheap but is needed to keep nursing this cruisair along – a likely new definition of insanity. Now in process of relocating the PLM boxes to same location as Don’s are. Lots of crawling around in tough space – as I am sure you well know. Mike

Microair makes them but have to buy through dealer. I used Tropicalmarine in Ft Lauderdale. Guy named Howard had best price and seemed to know what he was talking about. Wild variation on pricing – and none of it good. The installation process is some sort of hell. Converters proud of hiding the PLM boxes in the most difficult to access places imaginable. That is the reason I am moving all mine to first bay curbside. Getting too old to fold into a pretzel and then work.

BTW: tip on Tropicalmarine came from ETLC. Those guys are great. I’m one of their biggest fans.

FYI: there is a company in PA called Flight Systems, Inc that can test and possibly rebuild those circuit boards.

Told you more than you wanted to know!
