I think I am starting to get Cruisair insanity to go with my fan clutch insanity. In my 2001 Marathon XLII (#692), I usually tweek them (3) a bit adding from my dwindling supply of R22 as needed to keep them at their anemic best. Now the salon anemia has gone into agony with about a 6 degree delta – at best. Static pressure is around 120 which is about where it should be according to my test conditions but operational low and high sides are both high around 70 and 270. At first glance would think (in my mind, at least) an overfill condition. But these readings are before adding anything. Considered an obstructive phenomenon but having trouble reconciling that with both sides being high. Nevertheless, I leaped into the breach and let pressures down to those indicated on the chart but, of course, nothing changed. Dirty coil also a consideration.

I’m no Lonestarace so went looking for help. Dana, at AAP, suggested a stuck reversing valve and to try going off and on with heat function a few times. No joy. And, as a matter of fact, no heat. This unit is a reman from AAP put in by Marathon FL when we bought the coach a few years ago and I don’t know if the heat ever worked since we never use the heat from the Cruisairs. (On testing now, the heat from the other two does work) So could this reman unit not have a reversing valve? According to Dana, they all have it. ? not hooked up to SMX. Anyway, if it is there, it doesn’t work so replacing it seems like a reasonable relatively low cost option along with cleaning the condenser coil.

Now the rub. This unit is the deeper of the two behind the front bumper and is immovable. It looks to me like they must have wrestled it in there, nailed it to the floor, and then hooked up the lines and charged foiling any hope of detaching it from the floor and then sliding it forward to work on it. So if everything gets unhooked, charge lost, no way to test any fix without a complete reinstall and recharge. Wow. It is not like that can’t be done but now the issue of R22. Currently going for around $800 for a 30# cylinder – if you can find it. If it takes a couple of ins and outs to fix the thing, we are getting into real money (not to mention work) making a whole new unit and doing a swap out more feasible. Anybody know how to deal with a unit in that location to even clean the coil?

So what about Nu22? (Dana says stick with the old R22) Anybody have any experience with that as a replacement fridgerant? How about adding top off amounts with that? And, yes, I understand the legalities of combining. Makes my Cruisair insanity worse and cutting in roof airs looking more attractive all the time. Mike
