Crestron Upgrade to Ipads ?
Posted by Larry & Diane on June 18, 2015 at 10:24 amI am seriously considering upgrading to ipads to replace the Crestrons in our bus… How many folks have done this and how do you like it? I think Mark did it in his Legendary ?
Last fall I discussed it briefly with Jeff and I am trying to talk myself into it. What generation ipads did you use.. should I buy brand new ones.. Is the ipad mini better than the reg one… seems it would be easier to handle… How many gigs would it need to be?
Looks like we will end up with a long list for Jeff this year… but want to get all our ducks in a row before we make an appt to go there. Don’t want to forget anything !!
Cheers, Diane

I have two mini iPads and one Android phone connected to my Crestron. The Crestron app doesn’t use much memory. My iPads are 16 GB units – the Android phone is just an old phone no longer used as a phone. The iPads are older versions. I wouldn’t use a full size iPad because of the size. Other mini pads based on Android system will work. The Crestron app is easily downloaded at $100 a pop. I have three controllers for convenience of not have to carry one unit from room to room or out to the bay A/V unit. -
I had the conversion done in my Marathon. I bought an IPad Air and a Mini. I bought the latest generation because they were just a little more money that the previous generation. I had to have my Crestron system reprogrammed to control some added electronics. That process was very expensive, consumed a lot of time, and generally was a gigantic pain. By the time I figured out that the shop that was doing the work did not know what they were doing, and that their estimated cost of the reprogramming was way too low, I was too far in to the project to abandon it.
If you do not need to reprogram your system, the cost for the conversion is reasonable. If you need to reprogram, be very careful. It could be painful.

I had Jeff’s guy Andrew do it on the Legendary and had Liberty hook them up in the new H3. I used 2 iPad mini retinas wi-fi only for dedicated use for the Crestron. I also bought the sleeves and docking stations from Port. They work great and don’t slide around when moving.
I have an issue with the iPads in the new coach that I did not have before. They interfere with each other and according to Liberty it is because this model year (2011) was only setup to have one iPad originally. They could fix it but according to them, it was going to take many hours and $$$$$ to do it. I plan to talk to Jeff about seeing what Andrew can do to remedy the issue.
I do have all the latest and greatest connectivity…I can connect to the coach with my own iPad air and do everything remotely you can do in the coach. Kind of neat…I can turn on or off the a/c units, check shore power status etc. Lights on or off…you get the idea. This is availbale only if you have the internet access point setup through Liberty from what I was told. It is $800 / month and is supposed to be unlimited as they are all grouped together with Verizon. It works pretty well so far, and I can get into it no problem with my AT&T iPad air. You need a static ip address and a router that will let you configure what they need it to do. Mine had already been updated prior to the purchase.
We like the mini size better, and the retina displays are very nice.
Go for it!

Hey Diane,
Last fall we had Liberty update ours, right before Oklahoma City actually. It’s quite great. I would highly recommend them doing it because they already have the current Crestron programming which will save a bunch of time, and they have access to the Allen Bradley information as well.
On the dash we have a retina iPad with a Launchpad that charges it while connected (via magnets and a case) and leaves it removable to control things from anywhere, even outside. This iPad is cell too, though we don’t have service to it. The wifi only ipads don’t have GPS built in. Mine needs it for the GPS software that it also runs, and it also controls the Fusion head unit for sound while driving.
We put another of the same in the bedroom, though it is wifi only because we didn’t need a GPS ( I can find things in there!). 😉
My iPhone is now also capable of controlling everything, whether I am at the outside entertainment center or home.
While we were at it we had them add cameras to both sides and the front, all viewable remotely on my phone or iPad. We got new inverters so that we can change draw rates from anywhere and be notified when the generator kicks on, new TVs throughout, and added Sirius, AppleTV and Roku (the best!).
With minor differences, ours has the same exact setup as the 2016s rolling off of the assembly line. Again, I would recommend Frank at Liberty being the contact for this and you can basically ask him to make your bus new.

This
winter while at Pelican we got a visit from Karl and family, they
were staying at Naples Motorcoach a few miles away. So Mr. Techie
whips out his Iphone and proceeds to adjust the air conditioning in
his coach to be sure the dog is comfortable. I like pushing buttons,
but have to tell you, that was pretty slick.
To be able to monitor and adjust the bus systems remotely is a huge plus.

Tom,
Having the i-link function is the ONLY reason I bought an i-phone. I really have no interest in texting and all the fancy stuff that the new phone will do. I had the texting turned off on my flip phone.
But, my siblings say that I will get used to it and will really embrace it… we’ll see. I check on the coach at least 3 or 4 times a day (electric, air condtioning, etc.).

Karl:
Assuming your Crestron is controlled through an in-house WiFi modem, when you want to use your phone to control it, isn’t it necessary to change the WiFi setting from the cell service WiFi to the in-house WiFi, then back again if you want to use the data feature of the phone while near your coach? Just curious!
-
Actually, Grizz, the settings are such that if you aren’t connected directly through the wifi it will connect as a “remote” system, regardless of where you are located.
I forgot that another nice thing about the iPad on the dash is that I watch my rear view camera on it while driving, though I do switch to the app to control the radio on occasion and to the navigation program.

And here I am, a lone voice in the wilderness wishing I had switches conveniently located for all the Crestron functions, and the Crestron replaced with a single small hand held remote control for A/V system control.
-
Jon…
You are not a lone voice… I literally hate the TV being setup on the Crestron… I don’t mind the other funtions but I HATE the TV and audio system being set up that way. I don’t even want to screw with the ipads for the TVs either !!!
Nothing better than picking up a simple remote for that !!
Cheers, Diane

Sure there is, Diane. That’s why I have my iPhone. Smaller than any universal remote you can get with every single function at my fingertips.
I just read some of your problems on another thread. Try the reboot. I had problems in the past with the Bose that required pulling the power plug from it to force a reboot. When I did my upgrade I was hoping they would go, but they are too integral to the system.
Some switches are nice, but you just can’t get away from the fact that everything these days has a computer built in.

This disscussion reminds me why Ben C. told us to buy the bus we presently have. When I asked him why, he told us that it was the new XLII chassis(which came out on the H first) and that it may very well have been the last pre-AMX bus that Vantare built. Along with my flip phone, I like pushing buttons individually to cause something to happen. As far as A/V control everything works exactly the same as it does in our house. The Direct TV remote is trained to operate everything on any individual TV. We do have to use the TV remote if we are on over the air digital though. Simple, don’t have to think and there is only one remote out near each of the 3 TV’s. Why would we want to re-learn a different system every time we go from home to bus ? Geo.

Karl…
I have actually unplugged everything in the cabinet along with turning the outlets breaker off etc the receiver is the only thing that doesn’t respond to the Crestron… don’t know if you can reboot the entire Crestron system or not and don’t know how to either… Can it be rebooted? My Crestron remote has a reset button in the settings
on it but thought it may take out everything so I haven’t touched it.Very frustrating.
Cheers, Diane

Hi Diane,
My understanding is that the Crestron can certainly be rebooted.
Just curious, why not call Liberty to get the correct info on your system since it was installed by them?
Like with anything, it’s wonderful when things work and frustrating when they don’t whether it be a car, something at the house, etc.
Good luck!

to either bite the bullet and pay Liberty, Marathon etc. BIG bucks to have them do the programming or to have a copy of your Crestron code. Most people do not have the code and are being strapped over a barrel when it comes to reprogramming costs.
I am fortunate to have had the code and when I was at Jeff’s place last year, Andrew was able to use it and to port all functions over to iPad. I bought 2 Minis with 16GB and keep one upfront and the other in the bedroom.
Much nicer than the original Crestron panels, which were large and heavy.Cheers,
Ronald
