  • Crack under window

Posted by Archived on July 9, 2017 at 6:10 pm

    Hello,

I’m new to the Prevost, and I’m looking at a 1998 Marathon. There is a 5”( approx) crack at the corner of one of the windows that runs to the end of that panel. Is that an indication of undue stress, or being high sided on something, or just being a 20 year old bus? I’ll try to upload a pic.
    Thanks of the help.

Interesting. I have a 1999 XLV and have noticed a similar small skin crack (about 1 inch) off one of the window corners in the middle of the bus. Has not gone to the edge of the panel. I have owned the bus for 5 years and the crack has not changed. I consider it cosmetic only.

As to what could cause it, hard to say. Lots can happen in 18-20 years. It could just be metal fatigue. The inside lower window corner in the center of the bus would be subject to stress risers if you high center the bus. But I see no damage below. Most likely somebody did not use the approved jacking points when lifting the bus and/or jacked up only one side of the bus.

I think cracks such as described might be common. I had one similar crack originating from a lower corner of a window to the bottom of the skin panel on both my 87 and 97 coach.

Some H models have cracks in bay doors. The point being the cracks may be design issues and not indiciative of abuse or damage.

Just curious; is it an XLV (metal skin) or H3 (fiberglass)?

The rivet XL is metal skin.

The one I’m looking at is also metal skinned.
