Country Coach Sunmulon Switch Button Lights
Posted by John on January 21, 2019 at 7:57 amI have a problem that I’ve been living with for some time now and it’s come time to solve it.
I have three Sunmulon switch groups that have no lighting to indicate the off/on status of the switch. The switches work fine, but have no lighting. The affected groups are:
1. The switch group over the Toll Window.
2. The group on the instrument panel to the right of the steering wheel having to do with instrument panel options.
3. The group by the right seat to the rear of the entry door.
It’s my understanding that there is a source for power of 5 or maybe 5.5 VDC for these lights that may be the problem. Can anyone shed any light (no pun intended) on this subject? It’s a 1999/1999 Country Coach XLV 45.

In the main electric control cabinet in the first bay is the power source. It will be close to the passenger side. Usually when one panel will not light it is a loose connector at either end. The light power is sent to the panels thru the board connectors. You need to figure out if the light voltage is leaving the board.

Hey John, The power source for the sunmullon switches come from one or two 5V power supplys soldered onto the back of the mother board in the ECC cabinet in the first bay.
Take the cover off of the cabinet and remove the nut holding the mother board in to the cabinet and remove it allowing the ECC mother board to rotate out of the metal cabinet. Before you do that hit the main house disconnect button above the passenger seat to turn off power to the board.
When you swivel out the board about a foot so you can see behind it, look about 2 to 4 inches in and at the bottom of the mother board you will see one or two rectangular white ceramic pieces about 3 inches long and about 1/4 inch wide soldered to the board in a vertical position.
The small solid wire usually come un soldered from the mother board at the top or bottom.
On my coach there were two but on Michael Powers coach there was only one, anyway these are the devices that supply power for the switches.
Just re solder them to the mother board.

The 5V power supplies soldered onto the back of the mother board in the ECC cabinet also burn out and then need to be replaced.

Hi John,
Four or five years ago I had the same problem on my 1995 CC. The problem was located in the steering box compartment on the driver’s side. There is a circuit board in this compartment that takes 12v from the ECC and turns it into 5V out to the switches. I had to send the board out for repair and all worked well thereafter. I looked through my old emails and I was told, “If you don’t have 5 V out, you will not have LED switch panel lights for the forward panels. FYI, all other panels get their 5 V from the ECC panel in Bay one on the right rear of the board.”
I have attached a picture that I was sent though my board was somewhat different than the one I attached. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help. I had previously under the impression that the problem was exactly where you are showing in the photo. Do you have any idea which of the wires shown would be the 5vdc source for the lights?

My board is different, but on this diagram I believe it is wire #11. I would first test the 12v incoming power which is the far right red wire. If you don’t have 12v here the problem could be a blown fuse or connection at the Main ECC board. I would also make sure the green ground wires are secure. In my CC manual all of the wires are listed and numbered. If you have the manual, it will give you the wire color and number. If you remove one of the panels with the switches, you should also be able to see the wire numbers listed.

The 5v transformer is the long, grey rectangular solid block towards the bottom right side of your photo.
Now, I may be wrong about the following, but I think the 5v transformer on the back of the ECC Motherboard provides the backlight power for the Sunmulon switch panels located –
• Entry Door Switch Panel beside the Passenger Seat
• Kitchen Switch Panel
• Bathroom Switch Panels (I have two panels)
• Bedroom Switch PanelMICHAEL

Thanks guys. I do have the documentation and now it’s time to start probing with a test light and volt meter. I’m going to get into that ASAP.

Okay guys here’s where I am now, which is as follows:
1. Everything looks good as far as I can tell with the outside panel (SCCB) under the driver’s window. There is 12vdc on the right wire and 5vdc on the two blue wires on pin 11 when the panel lights over the right windshield and the panel lights under the toll window (both of which can be turned on from either panel) are on.
2. Here is the continuing problem. There is no switch button lighting in the entry door panel to the rear of the entry door by the passenger seat, or the switch buttons in the panel over the driver’s left side window or the switch buttons in the dash panel just to the right of the steering wheel that change the dash display and reset the trip odometers.
That’s the gremlin that we’re chasing.
All of the switches work fine, but with no lighting so you can’t tell whether the button’s function is on or off. The question now, is where the 5vdc that powers those panel’s button lights comes from. I’m suspecting it’s from the same source and probably from the ECC panel and probably from somewhere in the lower right (looking from the front) corner. The mystery for me, is where?
Also, while on the Sunmoulon button subject, I would like to decommission the bumper release button in the panel by the passenger seat (I can’t imagine why it was ever put there to begin with). I would think that it could be done by clipping the wire to that button on the backside of the button. Would that be the best way to do it?

The panel lights that come from the panel in the left front run compartment are any that are on the dash dimmer switch. The rest come from the panel in the first bay. The ones by the passenger seat may not de on the dimmer circuit. Typically this can be due to a dirty connection at the panel or switch panel plug. Check to see if you have 5 volts coming to the switch panel. From memory it is one of the wires on the end plus the next one to it. The very end is ground and the next one is the 5 volts. Again, this is from memory.

Okay, let’s see if I can explain this.
1. On the card for the switches at the entrance door, there is a plug on the left side of the card and a plug on the right side. At the top of the male plug or pins on the left the first pin is labeled “PNL LTS”. The first pin on the right is labeled “GND”. Attached is a chart of the volt meter readings for both sides.
The instrument panel switch panel also has a switch button to turn on and off the panel lights. The wire numbers attached to the back of it are numbers :
87 – Yellow – Shows 13.20VDC
228 – Black – Shows 0VDC
229 – White – Shows 0VDC
233 – Yellow – Shows 0VDC
335 – Purple – Shows 0VDC
Green – Ground
I only show one of these numbers (87) in my documentation and it indicates going to a CB radio.
I grounded the top wire/pin on the right of the door switch panel to the bus frame and it had no effect.
I’m stumped for now.
What are your thoughts?
