Country Coach Generator Battery ???
Posted by Archived on October 6, 2018 at 9:37 am06 Country Coach XLII
I don’t see a generator battery anywhere. Is there one?
If not, does the generator starter get its juice from the house battery bank or the chassis batteries?
Thanks!

Les,
Your coach may be different, but I’m betting you have a separate battery for the generator only. You should also have a battery boost switch, mine is with the interior gen start switch. This will tie the house batteries to the generator battery to start the generator when your gen battery is weak. My 02 was tough to spot, but is located behind the generator in a black battery box. Can you follow the positive and negative cables off the starter to the battery?

Les…
You do have a separate battery for your genset, just may not be easily spotted, and a pain to get at. If your gen is on a slide, it’s most likely in a plastic battery box in a corner at the back of the gen bay. As George suggested, easiest way to find it is trace the cables from the starter back.

I had 2003 CC XL2 the gen battery located in thc center of the bays. I had to remove a panel (drivers side 2nd bay back if i remember correctly) to get to it- same location that allows the air to flow for cooling the Generatior

Do you see a alternator attached / mounted on your generator ?
If yes… there is a seperate generator battery somewhere close by.
Usually close by as battery cable line loss and heat is usually considered for battery placement location.

In my Legendary, which I was told was built like a CC in many aspects, the generator batteries (2 smaller 12v AGM’s) were located on top of the house batteries. Not the easiest place to find, or change out, but that is where they were located. If not there, then I have no other ideas.

Les,
This is a time to do what all us owners should do and that is to open up every cover plate, panel and door to access what is behind them and see what is where.
It is amazing how converters manage to hide things, not because they want to make your life miserable but because they are working with limited space and they have to put stuff anywhere they have a few cubic inches of space.
When you do get it open record what you find, either in photos or by making a list. That way when you need to service something or turn something off you will know where to find it.

Jon, I really don’t forget anything… I have a photographic memory, just out of film…
Actually I’ve been in the generator compartment cleaning, checking stuff, etc. I think the battery(s) must be another layer further inboard.
This obviously should be on the agenda for this weekend’s maintenance session at ETLC. I’ll take pictures while the group crams some skinny guy inside the bay…

The CC owners, especially those who have your vintage are going to be a wealth of information and before we begin the session on Saturday I will be asking for a show of hands so we can identify who has what conversion, vintage, engine, model, etc. If there are CC owners you guys should introduce yourselves to one another and share information. Tom, Jeff and I aren’t able to get into much conversion stuff because to be honest we have a hard time keeping up with the various models and systems on the Prevost side of things, but somehow someone is going to find your generator battery.

Gen battery access from pass side where your tv is behind the wall….

Jeff … suggestion. When you make up the signs which depict which coach is whose, include the year, model, converter, and engine type. That might make it easier for us to find a coach owner of similar vintage, etc.
