  • Corbin Entry key latch – FIXED ! (?)

Posted by Bill on January 17, 2023 at 1:11 pm

I have the pictured Corbin lock on the entry door. It has started to rotate when I try to lock or unlock the door. It’s working properly when it does not rotate but when it rotates I can no longer unlock the door. It seems like I can get it to tighten up if I rotate the center part with the key hole but there is also an outside ring that just rotates but does not seem to be engaging any sort of threads that might allow it to be tightened. Can someone tell me how this works and how it’s tightened? Right now I can’t lock up for fear of being locked out.

    Thanks for your help.

Bill there is a metal clip that slides over the cylinder on the inside od the door. The clip retains the lock cylinder complete into the door and prevents the cylinder from rotating when you turn the key in the key way.

Take the inner door panel off and you will see the cylinder. The only way that retainer would strip is someone applying a lot of pressure on cylinder trying to turn. That is my opinion as the clip is made from spring metal.

    Bill,

I was was waiting for someone with direct knowledge of the Prevost application of the cylinder lock to respond. Since no takers i will tell you what i know about these in a commercial application. Most of the ones i have dealt with requires removal of the bolt plate on the edge of the door. There are 2 set screws that keep the cylinder assembly from turning. Make sure the key slot is vertical then tighten them up and it should solve your problem (IF) they are the same .

There you go. I should have waited one more minute.

Inside. The piece of square metal at the top does move from side to side with some force or if I turn the key from outside (sometimes).

I was trying to lock the door from outside when the key jammed about 1/2 way around. I tried to force it (carefully) and it began to rotate. I used some WD 40 followed by silicone to clear the WD40 and the lock began to turn the full stroke and lock and unlock the door but by then the lock was rotating with very little force. That’s where we stand today. The latch has been highly modified by previous owner(s) so if it looks weird, it is and Prevost doesn’t have any parts to put it back to its original configuration.

I’m thinking I would replace and start over:)

FIXED (or nearly so). I think the advice to start over is sound! Looking at the picture I could see that it was a screw that screws into a slot on the side of the cylinder that prevents rotation. I knew I had seen 2 screws so I gave it a try. Sure enough the outside one was loose and tightening it up secured the cylinder. There is still a spot where the key gets stuck so I am going to replace the cylinder when possible. Cleaning and lubrication has help the key turn a lot but with the panel off and the key out you can see from inside out and there appears to be some crud in there yet. Seems like a tiny pipe cleaner or something (or some white grease stuffed in there?) might get that one tiny catch to release. It’s had a bit of a catch for a long time so that part is not new.

Thanks to everyone for ideas. That’s what got me on a Google search for a pictures of what the lock did and how it was attached.

As widely used as these are in commercial application I would think any locksmith would have new ones. I had to have my key recut to allow smooth rotation. I just drove to a locksmith with a large enough parking lot and he came out and did it in a couple of minutes.
