Posted by Craig on December 20, 2017 at 12:35 pmHi folks what kind of oil are you using for the cooling fan gear box. I have seen several options.
Thank you

Might be pretty special stuff because it was not easy to find, here you go:
Mobil SHC 634
Source: Alliance Chemical 204 S. Edmond St. Taylor, Texas 76574
512-365-6838
Probably should get two quarts, but this supplier may only do a one gallon minimum. Looks like they may do the packaging from a bigger container (drum). Good luck.
edit: not hard to find – google it. Zoro and others have it.

I wonder why it requires a special gear oil. Does anybody know?

Two (2) serpentine belt strings broke becoming wrapped around gear box out-put shaft then taking out shaft oil seal. 2005 H3-45.
Oil clean up was done prior to picture….sprayed oil over the entire engine room.
Owner is doing “new” gear box replacement, and all belts. They are oil soaked.

Al, you should also check the idler/tensioner pulley bearing on that side. I had the same cutting of belt thing happening on the alternator belt and it turns out my tensioner bearing was locking up occasionally when hot causing the belt to be cut.
I have the bearing on my desk as a paper weight. It still turns fine when cold so it took me a while to find the culprit. I was down to belt changes every two hours until I replaced the bearings. These bearings are supposed to be greased for “life” but they tend to dry out after 10 years or so.

I’ve learned Prevost Service has been contacted, parts ordered, have set up a service date, Prevost will drop ship new gear box, with all new belts.
Starting batteries at 5 years old will also be replaced with 4/ 7234 NAPA. Saved $600 per battery using NAPA-AITA PC card.
Bus owner says Prevost Service has been very easy to work with to have repairs done on site.
Here is side note….An owner of a 7 year old plastic coach questioned factory help on a coach over 10 years old receiving factory support ?
Something we Prevost owners take for granted and 100% not available to many plastic RV owners.
