Forget the color. It used to mean something but not anymore.

Use only coolants that meet the Detroit Diesel and generator specs. Here is the Detroit Diesel publication on coolants. Keep in mind that cavitation is a serious issue with a diesel engine and the wrong coolant can contribute to engine damage.

Finding an acceptable extended life coolant for the engine is pretty easy. Finding one that’s acceptable to all other components in the coolant path is not as easy. There is one additive that has been proven to attack soldered joints like those found in radiator cores and heat exchangers. I would steer clear of that one additive because you can find others without. The Detroit labelled product would be my first choice.

One of the things to remember about heavy duty diesel coolant is that it has a change interval that has to be observed. If you do a search on the internet for information about coolants it will show that coolants do far more than help transfer heat. After a period of time in service coolants have to be changed because they no longer function to protect the engine.

There are extended life coolants which when properly used can extend the change interval, but they also require changing.

And Tom’s reference to color at one time was correct but almost every color in the rainbow is now available and the old color guidance has been thrown out the window. So we have to verify the coolant spec meets the engine manufacturer’s requirement.

TMC RP-329 TYPE A product with a corrosion inhibitor.

Any EC-1 spec coolant will work. However…….the system has to be completely purged of the 2 year coolant. If a coach has EC-1 spec coolant steps must be taken to prevent adding SCAs or mixing inorganic acid technology coolant with the organic acid technology coolant.

If not mistaken and assuming the CAT EC-1 formulary hasn’t changed, I would avoid CAT EC-1. Although it should be okay in a DD60, it MAY not be safe for other coolant use systems. There is two formulas of EC-1 that have been proven to degrade solder joints. Again, from memory CAT uses one of those two formularies.
